Harry Potter The Young Actors Who Almost Played The Lead Role

Daniel Radcliffe got his big break playing the title role in the film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s beloved fantasy series Harry Potter, but a few other young actors were seeking out the role. Radcliffe grew up on the set of the Harry Potter series, which spanned a decade starting in 2001. Here’s who tried out for the role and why Radcliffe was deemed the perfect choice for the boy wizard.

Harry Potter was the main character of the series, considering he was the driving force behind the story. He was introduced in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, as the orphan living with his relatives learned that he was a wizard. After embarking on his new chapter at Hogwarts, his identity as the “Boy Who Lived” came into focus while it connected to Lord Voldemort. Harry and his closest friends, Ron and Hermione, often found themselves in the middle of the conflicts plaguing Hogwarts and the wizarding world since Harry’s existence threw a wrench in Voldemort’s plans to rise to power.

When the Harry Potter series launched, the lead character was intended to be 11 years old. A good portion of the main cast was very young, but they were tasked with leading the film with the hope of reprising their roles for the long-term. This added complications in casting as the team behind the film needed to discover the perfect fits that could build a franchise. Before Radcliffe was cast, director Chris Columbus offered the role to Liam Aiken, the young actor he worked with on Stepmom. Columbus was forced to take back his offer after Rowling’s rules of hiring British actors, something that kept Robin Williams out of contention for Hagrid. Harry Potter vet, Tom Felton, also initially auditioned for the role of Harry but Radcliffe’s past had an impression on Columbus and the casting team.

How Daniel Radcliffe Ended Up Getting The Role Of Harry Potter

One of the producers for the first Harry Potter film asked Radcliffe to audition for the lead role in 2000. Columbus saw Radcliffe’s performance in the TV adaptation of David Copperfield and realized the boy was perfect for the role. After months of the auditioning process, Radcliffe was offered the part, but his parents declined since they didn’t want their son filming for years in Los Angeles. Warner Bros. negotiated by filming in the UK and giving Radcliffe a two-film contract in the beginning. Radcliffe and his family agreed to the terms and Rowling gave her blessing when it came to the casting, proclaiming that the young actor was the embodiment of Harry.

That two-movie contract quickly expanded into an eight movie franchise. Radcliffe became the face of the franchise but ended up struggling with the fame that came with the role. Even though the actor will always be linked to Harry Potter, he has since grown his career to showcase his range in the industry. As for the others, Aiken continued to find work after losing out on the role and Felton got his own breakout role playing Draco Malfoy throughout the Harry Potter series so it all worked out in the end.
