On day one of San Diego Comic-Con 2016, we shared breakfast with Hasbro to start the event and to take a look at the latest toys and SDCC exclusives from Hasbro brands including Transformers, Nerf, My Little Pony, Yo-kai Watch, Trolls, Star Wars, and Marvel. There were even a few Micronauts and G.I. Joe figures for those classic collectors excited for the upcoming shared Hasbro movie universe.
Highlights from the showcase include the 75th anniversary, $300 metal Captain America shield, new X-Men figures (this is especially notable), new Nerf blasters based on iconic Star Wars sidearms, massive Transformers sets and much, much more. Take a look.
For fans attending Comic-Con International in San Diego this year, the Hasbro Booth (#3213) will have exclusive items and all sorts of interesting photo opportunities. First up is the mighty shield, available for photo opps (see below) and currently available on a slight discount on Amazon.com.
Captain America Shield
Of course, I lifted the shield which certainly has weight to it and a great feel with its leather straps on its back.
Marvel’s Doctor Strange
The number one project Marvel Studios is promoting at this year’s event is of course, Doctor Strange. Marvel’s panel is Saturday at 5:30 PM PST where Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will co-headline the presentation with expected surprises which may include updates on Black Panther (since Chadwick Boseman is at the event!), Thor: Ragnarok (there are logos everywhere at the Marvel booth and the film is already shootin), and Captain Marvel (Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said to expect news this summer).
From Marvel comes “Doctor Strange,” the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place—a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange—armed with newly acquired magical powers—is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence. Join Strange on his dangerous, mystifying, and totally mind-bending journey when Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” opens in theaters on November 4, 2016.
Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Scott Adkins, Benjamin Bratt with Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.
Jyn Erso – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
The headlining Star Wars figure is the Jyn Erso Black Series toy, first unveiled last week at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016, and available exclusively at SDCC 2016 at the Hasbro Booth. Other Star Wars merchandise at the Hasbro event include Nerf guns (Rey and Han Solo’s blasters), original trilogy and The Force Awakens figurs, and plenty of Lightsabers. Even the Chewbacca Mom mask was there…
The Other Star Wars Stuff
Kylo Ren Collection
Transformers
Marvel Hasbro Action Figures
One of the major exclusives on the show floor this year is The Collector’s Vault set which includes a few fan-fave cosmic characters. Other sets included Spider-Man and Captain America: Civil War figures and collections.
MARVEL THE COLLECTOR’S VAULT LEGENDS SERIES 3.75-Inch Action Figure Set(Ages 4 years & up/Approx. This impressive 3.75-inch scale MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES set features fan-favorite Marvel Comics characters and mysterious ancient artifacts, such as ZODIAC KEY, CASKET OF ANCIENT WINTERS, and WAND OF WATOOMB. THE COLLECTOR’S VAULT set includes HOWARD THE DUCK and introduces MARVEL’S THE COLLECTOR, MARVEL’S COSMO, LOCKJAW, and MARVEL’S MOON BOY figures to the MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES. Figures feature detailed articulation, sculpting, and deco. Includes 5 figures and 3 artifacts. MARVEL THE COLLECTOR’S VAULT LEGENDS SERIES 3.75-Inch Action Figure Set will be for sale at San Diego Comic-Con 2016. Following the convention, a limited number will be available on HasbroToyShop.com. Canadian fans can also purchase the figure set during Fan Expo Canada in September.
X-Men Legends
This little gallery might be the most exciting since it represents Marvel lifting their strict restrictions on licensing and merchandise related to properties whose film licenses are held by rival film studios Fox – a consistent source of controversy. But with Marvel TV and Fox working together to co-produce several television programs, things are looking up for Marvel’s mutants.
Micronauts
While not a major presence, Micronauts was at the showcase as well!
G.I. Joe
Magic the Gathering
Magic cards had a section to itself by the Star Wars setup with some dedicated cosplay!
My Little Pony
Trolls, Nerf, Yo-Kai Watch
Last but not least, Hasbro’s other key brands were on display as well.
