Hawaii FiveO Why Daniel Dae Kims Chin Ho Kelly Left the Series

Actor Daniel Dae Kim has quite the impressive resume spanning roles in television, film and even video games. Best known for his role as Jin-Soo Kwon on Lost, he’s also famous for his role as Chin Ho Kelly on the CBS police procedural Hawaii Five-O. The series premiered in 2010 to strong ratings and lasted through 2017, totaling ten seasons. But, though Kim’s Kelly was a lead character, he didn’t stick around for all ten seasons. In fact, he left prior to Season 8.

In long-running TV series, it’s common for actors to come and go for various reasons, but unfortunately, Kim’s departure wasn’t on the best of terms.

Who Was Chin Ho Kelly On Hawaii Five-O?

Detective Lieutenant Chin Ho Kelly was a main character on Hawaii Five-O. Born and raised in Hawaii, Kelly eventually joined the Hawaii Police Department and became a decorated cop. He was skilled in hand-to-hand combat, an expert in weaponry and technology and a master in the area of interrogating and criminal profiling.

Though Kelly was incredibly loyal and honest, he was accused of corruption while on the HPD which forced him to depart from his job. However, in Hawaii Five-O’s pilot episode, he was recruited by Steve McGarrett to join the Hawaii Five-O Task Force, where he continued to use his police skills.

Kelly continued to work in the Hawaii-Five O Task Force until he was offered a position in a new Five-O Task Force being established by the San Francisco Police Department. In the Season 8 premiere, it was revealed that he had moved to San Francisco and taken the job.

Why Daniel Dae Kim Left Hawaii Five-O

While Kelly’s departure to San Francisco meant he left the Hawaii Five-O Task Force, it also spelled Daniel Dae Kim’s departure from the series. Kim left on account of a raise dispute. The actor wanted to be paid equal to his white co-stars, but his request was not granted. Therefore, Kim made the decision to leave Hawaii Five-O.

Despite the fallout, Kim remained grateful for the experience and didn’t seem to hold animosity towards the network. In fact, when Hawaii Five-O was canceled after Season 10, Kim took to Twitter to voice his opinion on the show’s end, noting the show’s positive effect on Hawaii’s economy.
