Founding MCU Avenger Hawkeye will finally be receiving his own solo outing in November 2021 in the form of a Disney+ live-action series. When the first trailer for the series dropped, one of the most exciting comic book Easter eggs was the inclusion of Lucky, the Pizza Dog, a loyal canine with a taste for extra cheese and comical adventure.

First appearing in Matt Fraction and David Aja’s critically acclaimed Hawkeye vol. 4 on which the MCU series appears to be significantly based, Lucky has become a prominent supporting character in Hawkeye comics, with many stories centered around him. Although on the surface he appears to be an ordinary dog, comic fans are aware that there is much more to Lucky than that.

10 The Tracksuit Draculas

Lucky was introduced to readers in the first issue of Hawkeye vol. 4, where he was depicted as originally belonging to antagonist Ivan Banionis, a local gangster and member of a group Hawkeye referred to as “The Tracksuit Draculas.” This mafia-like organization of ambiguous Eastern European origin owned the building in which Barton lived and had plans to evict its tenants in order to sell the property, which inevitably brought them into conflict with avenging archer. Although Hawkeye never expected to become a pet owner, his encounter with the Banionis’ gang and their dog would ultimately change his mind.

9 Lucky’s Missing Left Eye

During Hawkeye’s initial encounter with the Tracksuit Mafia, his first words to them were, “Can I pet your dog?” When told that it would bite, Barton offered the dog a bite of his pizza, immediately gaining the canine’s trust, much to the annoyance of Banionis and his men. When Hawkeye was later battling the gangsters outside of his apartment building, the dog attacked one of them just as he was about to shoot Clint, saving his life.

While the mafia was never depicted mistreating the dog prior, its immediate loyalty to Barton after such a small gesture and their subsequent treatment of it are all the implications necessary to draw this conclusion. After the injured gangster kicked the dog into the street, it was struck by a car and almost killed. Although it survived, it ultimately lost its left eye in the process.

8 Lucky’s Original Name Was Arrow

The first issue of Fraction and Aja’s Hawkeye juxtaposes Hawkeye’s encounter with the Tracksuit Draculas and events leading up to his coming into possession of their dog, with the events immediately following, and the harrowing ordeal at the veterinary clinic as Clint stresses over the animal’s survival. Despite repeatedly telling the doctors that it is not his dog, it was clear as the story progressed that this would not be the case for long.

At the close of the issue, the dog’s name tag is revealed to read “Arrow.” Hawkeye responds to this reveal saying, “I’ll think of something better”, officially accepting his unintended companion and setting the tone for the rest of the series’ themes of avoiding the obvious and playing towards the unexpected. This is an obvious dig at his DC counterpart Green Arrow, who some would consider a better archer than Hawkeye. The final panel of the second issue would eventually reveal that Clint had settled upon the name Lucky.

7 Kate Bishop

Co-starring in both the MCU’s Hawkeye series and the comics it is based upon, Kate Bishop is Marvel Comics’ second Hawkeye and a recurring member of the Young Avengers. Just as much Clint’s successor in spirit as in name, Kate and her predecessor have inevitably come to butt heads just as often as they have displayed their unique chemistry.

On one such occasion after a mission gone sideways, an angry Kate left New York, taking Lucky with her. Although Clint had been initially hesitant to claim the dog as his own, he was annoyed at his protegé having taken “his” dog, as he had finally come around to pet ownership. Kate eventually returned with the dog in tow, but their time together was influential upon the canine. While traveling with Kate, Lucky bonded with the second Hawkeye and would effectively become just as much Kate’s dog as Clint’s, much to the original’s annoyance.

6 Spotlight Issue

In an unexpected departure from the norm, 2013’s Hawkeye vol. 4, #11 is a spotlight issue told entirely from the perspective of Lucky. Although unorthodox, the story would go on to become critically acclaimed and is considered by many to be the crown jewel of Fraction and Aja’s 22 issue run.

The 2014 Eisner Award winner for Best Single Issue, this story followed a day in the life of the heroic pup as he helped the two Hawkeyes solve a murder, while along the way also revealing the name by which Lucky thinks of himself: Pizza Dog. Throughout the issue, Fraction’s use of garbled dialogue, save for keywords such as “good”, “bad”, and “pizza,” as well as the incorporation of symbols and original “emojis” to represent emotions and reactions created a unique view of the world through a canine shaped lense. It’s a perspective not often seen in traditional superhero comics, which is why the issue, and Lucky, are so beloved today.

5 Lucky’s Real-Life Inspiration

In March of 2014, Hawkeye writer Matt Fraction was featured as a guest on episode 241 of Live Wire Radio, a Portland, Oregon-based variety radio show and podcast. During this interview, Fraction explained many of his original ideas and influences while crafting his interpretation of Hawkeye, including the inspiration behind Lucky, the Pizza Dog. As told by Fraction, Lucky was based upon the writer’s real-life dog, Captain Applejack, who sadly had to be put down shortly before Fraction began writing Hawkeye.

4 All-New Hawkeye & Sparky

Following Fraction and Aja’s critically acclaimed Hawkeye run, the comic was rebooted as All-New Hawkeye under the creative team of writer Jeff Lemire and artist Ramón Pérez. Carrying over from Fraction’s run were both Hawkeyes Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, as well as Lucky, the Pizza Dog. Lemire and Pérez’s story added new layers to Clint and Kate’s relationship, introducing their counterparts from the multiversal variant Earth-15928, approximately 30 years into the future. Depicted alongside these future versions of Clint and Kate was Clint’s new dog, who, in contrast to Lucky, showed little interest in pizza.

3 Lucky’s Team-Up Adventure With Mewnir

Both a parody and an homage to the award-winning Pizza Dog story from Hawkeye vol. 4#11, writer Ryan North and artists Erica Henderson and Zac Gorman crafted an unofficial sequel in the pages of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl vol. 2 #15.

This time told entirely from a cat’s perspective, the comic featured Mewnir, the pet of Squirrel Girl’s roommate Nancy, as she teamed up with Lucky against the comic book version of Black Widow movie villain Taskmaster. Utilizing many of the same unorthodox storytelling techniques as its “predecessor,” North and Henderson’s story also featured the trademark humor and light-heartedness that made their take on Squirrel Girl an Eisner Award winner in its own right.

2 Secret Wars & Lucky The Pizza Bug

Marvel Comics’ 2015 universe-spanning crossover event, Secret Wars, introduced readers to dozens of previously unseen variant worlds and characters. Amidst the numerous mini-series and one-shots released to depict these alternate realities was Secret Wars: Secret Love, a collection of short stories across a handful of universes in the style of Marvel’s early romance comics. One of these stories also featured the only multiversal variant of Lucky to have been depicted to date.

Secret Love’s final entry, “Happy Ant-Iversary” by Katie Cook, depicted “Bug World”, a reality in which the Avengers were each recast as cartoon insects. Alongside an Ant-Man and Wasp who were literally an ant and wasp were characters such as “Roly-Poly Hulk” and “Thor Hopper”. Hawkeye’s Bug World counterpart was a moth, appropriately named “Moth-Eye”, who was joined by his pet grub worm, “Lucky the Pizza Bug.”

1 West Coast Avengers

Following Marvel’s Civil War II event, Kate Bishop relocated once again to LA, taking Lucky with her. Eventually followed by Barton, the two reconciled their recent differences to form a new incarnation of the West Coast Avengers. After recruiting heroes Fuse, Gwenpool, and America Chavez, they reluctantly later brought aboard Kid Omega, whose recently acquired reality show provided funding for the fledgling team.

As a sort of unofficial mascot of the team, Lucky remains a fan-favorite character of both real-life readers and presumably the viewers of the fictional tv show on which the team features in the comics. Although he has yet to receive a spotlight feature in this most recent comic, it’s likely only a matter of time.
