Hawkeyes MCU Show Has A Big ShangChi Connection

The addition of Swordsman to the MCU gives Marvel’s Hawkeye series a huge connection to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Both projects are scheduled to release in Phase 4. Shang-Chi, which was originally schedule for a February 2021 release, is now set to hit theaters in July of the same year. As for Hawkeye, no release date has been officially announced, but it’s believed that it will premiere on Disney+ sometime in late 2021.

The first Marvel project to center on Earth’s Mightiest Marksman is currently filming. With the show being in production, more details are coming out in regards to its cast. It’s been confirmed that Kate Bishop frontrunner Hailee Steinfeld will indeed be playing the female version of Hawkeye. Furthermore, Florence Pugh will reprise her Black Widow role of Yelena Belova. Two new MCU characters appearing in the series are Echo, played by Alaqua Cox, and Jack Duquesne, who will be portrayed by Better Call Saul actor Tony Dalton. Jack Duquesne is likely a live-action adaption of Jacques Duquesne aka The Swordsman, a former villain and a member of the Avengers. The Swordsman is known for being Hawkeye’s mentor.

The inclusion of the Swordsman means that Hawkeye will finally explore Clint Barton’s backstory, but it also provides the series with an excellent opportunity to create a connection to one of its Phase 4 movies: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The comic book counterpart of Shang-Chi’s main villain, Mandarin (Tony Leung) has important ties to Swordsman. His sword was created from the powers of Mandarin’s Ten Rings.

In Swordsman’s first appearance, he tried to join the Avengers but was turned down. Afterward, he was contacted by the Mandarin, who equipped him with a sword enchanted by the Ten Rings. In the comic books, each ring possesses a different ability. For example, one can shoot beams of fire while another can project lightning. Mandarin gave each ring’s ability to the Swordsman’s weapon. Armed with a sword that can emit numerous forms of energy, Swordsman became a formidable opponent of the Avengers capable of nearly beating the team on his own.

Assuming that the meaning of the Ten Rings in Shang-Chi will be more literal than it was in the Iron Man movies, it’s possible that the MCU will keep this connection between Mandarin and Swordsman. If Mandarin really does possess ten powerful rings, he could have encountered Swordman offscreen and created his signature weapon from the pages of The Avengers. If Duquesne does possess this sword, it would help make him into a formidable foe (or ally) of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Kate Bishop in the Disney+ series.

At some point in the series, it could be revealed that Swordsman worked with Mandarin’s organization as a minion. This would make sense, even if Marvel does end up making him into a hero. Though the comic book version of Swordsman did become an Avenger, he was a supervillain first. Marvel could take him down a similar path in the MCU. Since Marvel appears to be keep on emphasizing the importance of its Disney+ shows to the wider MCU, going in this direction with Hawkeye feels like a logical move, especially since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings doesn’t have an obvious connection to any of the other upcoming Marvel shows.
