HBO Max Will Be Free At Launch For Hulu Subscribers With HBO AddOn

Upcoming streaming service HBO Max has entered into a deal with Hulu that will ensure most subscribers who already pay for the HBO add-on will also have access to the new streamer at launch. HBO Max is only the latest streaming service to enter the crowded market and will debut on May 27. The last year alone has already seen the release of Disney+, Apple TV+, and short form service Quibi. Following the launch of HBO Max, NBCUniversal will debut a streamer of its own, Peacock, later this summer. Considering the already existing platforms CBS All Access, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix, by the end of 2020, the streaming market will be the most saturated it’s ever been.

One way HBO Max has stood apart from other streamers is its aggressive play for classic comedies. The service kicked things off by acquiring Friends last summer, a deal that was made before HBO Max even had a name. The streamer then shocked fans earlier this year with the announcement the cast would be returning for a reunion special, though it unfortunately won’t be available at launch due to the coronavirus. HBO Max will also house the CBS mega hit The Big Bang Theory, in a deal that was expected to cost millions.

Now, HBO Max has the opportunity to reach even more people than initially thought, as, per Variety, the new streamer has entered into an agreement with Hulu. The deal will allow most Hulu subscribers who already pay for the HBO add-on to receive HBO Max for free. Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to Hulu and HBO users who pay through another party. Hulu subscribers without HBO can still use HBO Max as well. However, it will cost them an extra $14.99/mo.

The real challenge with new streaming services is standing apart from the pack with original content. In the last year or so, Disney+ has been one of the only new platforms to find substantial success in that area. Star Wars series The Mandalorian was a slam dunk for the new streamer, thanks in part to the Internet’s obsession with Baby Yoda. However, even Disney+ is now struggling with original content. The Mandalorian season 2 is still months away, and it doesn’t help that production has stopped across Hollywood due to the ongoing pandemic. HBO Max has some interesting original content in the works, but it remains to be seen if it will actually entice potential subscribers.

This deal between HBO Max and Hulu is interesting, as it marks a collaboration between two competitors. However, both streamers must have realized it was financially wise to strike a deal. It’s a win-win for Hulu subscribers, as it will allow them to easily access HBO Max without having to subscribe to the service separately. Hopefully, Hulu users enjoy the perks that come with HBO Max when it launches this month.
