HBOs Lovecraft Country Has A Huge Budget To Bring Monsters To Life

It has been revealed that HBO has given their upcoming sci-fi horror series, Lovecraft Country, a massive budget to bring its monsters to life. The highly anticipated new series comes from Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, who are producers on the series, which has adapted Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name. The series, which recently debuted a new trailer showcasing its blend of sci-fi and horror, is set to premiere on the network this month.

Lovecraft Country focuses on Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors), who decides to embark on a road trip to locate his missing father (Michael K. Williams). Joining him on his journey is his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and childhood friend Leticia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell). Together, they venture into the underbelly of Jim Crow America in the 1950s, where they not only encounter racial threats but supernatural horrors as well. The series also stars Abbey Lee, Chase Brown, Aunjanue Ellis, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jada Harris. Misha Green serves as showrunner and recently talked about how the budget HBO provided allowed her imagination to indeed run wild.

According to IndieWire, during a recent virtual panel for Lovecraft Country, showrunner Misha Green revealed that HBO gave her a massive budget to work with. When discussing how large in scope the series would be, she stated,

“The playground you can play in is incredible. Our production designer said we had 162 stunts. The VFX houses we’ve been working with, the makeup special effects places we’ve been working with — they’re some of the biggest. They make ‘Star Wars’ movies. There’s no limits other than my imagination, which is fantastic.”

Though the series will undoubtedly have its fair share of supernatural monsters, Peele has said that Lovecraft Country will showcase the realities of Jim Crow America during that period as well. Though the series may borrow heavily from H.P. Lovecraft in terms of its aesthetic and otherworldly creatures, it will also subvert the horror icon. However, fans can still expect a wide array of supernatural creatures, including Cthulhu, a grotesque, highly menacing creature that has been featured in the marketing for the series.

HBO is no stranger to investing in series that are epic in scope, and this doesn’t seem to be an exception. It had been previously indicated that the series was given a Game of Thrones sized budget. Hearing Green talk about the extensive visual effects and stunts implemented into the series certainly gives those rumors a fair share of validity. The fact there are such a sizable amount of stunts, and visual effects in the series may hint that the trailers are holding back some genuine treats and surprises. Regardless, viewers will be able to see what Lovecraft Country has in store when it debuts on HBO August 16th.
