Henry Cavill posted a behind-the-scenes photo from The Witcher season 2, giving fans a sneak peek at a bloodied and dirty Geralt. Cavill, who shot to fame as Superman in 2013’s Man Of Steel, added Geralt of Riva to his list of iconic roles last year, when The Witcher season 1 debuted on Netflix. Based on the book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher was renewed for season 2 before season 1 had even debuted on Netflix, such was the streaming giant’s confidence that it would be a hit.

They turned out to be correct, with the show becoming one of the most-streamed on Netflix in late 2019 and early 2020. Season 2 started filming earlier this year, but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and The Witcher only resumed production last week, with a host of safety protocols in place. The crew didn’t spend the production shutdown lazing around, though, with showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich confirming the delay was beneficial to season 2, allowing the writers to perfect the scripts and streamline the emotional arcs for each character.

Now, Cavill has shared a look behind the scenes in a new set photo from The Witcher season 2. The British actor took a selfie in the makeup chair, showing him looking all bloodied and dirty after a day of shooting. He isn’t wearing his distinctive Geralt wig in the shot, but the caption reveals that he took the photo in the process of having it, and the tape that holds it in place, removed. No bald cap this year. Just pounds of 2 types of medical tape and some glue…. Removal is a joy. Jacqui and Ailbhe here, though, have the deft touch of angels. Jacqui more so an Angel of Vengeance, but that’s all part of her charm. Oh and for those who may be worrying. All of us are Covid cleared and bubbled 👍🏻. Cavill certainly looks disheveled in the photo, revealing that he must have been shooting a fight scene today. Geralt, of course, isn’t one to shy away from conflict, given that the character is a monster slayer. In fact, the action in the show is so extensive that Cavill and the rest of the cast reportedly went through rigorous training to prepare for their roles. Ironically, the biggest on-set injury, to Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer, happened as a result of her having to wear a hunchback prosthetic.

Cavill, too, is not one to shy away from a physical challenge, transforming his body to play Superman all those years ago, and throwing himself into the character of Geralt thanks to his love of the Witcher games. Cavill has spoken about bringing out aspects of Geralt’s character in his fighting style, something that can be seen at various points during season 1. And based on this photo, season 2 won’t be letting up on the action. Unfortunately, with filming expected to stretch into 2021, fans are going to have to wait to see just how much Geralt gets roughed up in The Witcher season 2, and by whom. In the meantime, they will have to be content with updates from Cavill on Instagram.
