Unihertz’s TickTock is a rugged Android phone with two screens, but the second makes it look like a smartwatch was attached to the back of the phone.

The Unihertz TickTock is a perfect example of what happens when a smartphone is fused with a smartwatch. Once in a while, there comes a device that has a feature or aspect designed to set it apart from others. The TickTock is one such phone with a secondary display on its back. While having a second screen is not an unusual feature in itself, it is the way Unihertz has implemented it that makes it different.
One of the top flagship smartphones launched this year is the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra and one of its notable features is the small additional display that sits next to the rear cameras. This secondary always-on display shows app notifications, call alerts, and also serves as a viewfinder for the camera. As a matter of fact, the small 1.1-inch AMOLED display is the same one Xiaomi used for its Mi Smart Band 5 fitness tracker, released in 2020.
Unihertz isn’t a household name, but the phone manufacturer has grabbed headlines in the past. For example, its ‘Jelly’ phone was marketed as the smallest 4G smartphone at the time. Then there was Titan – a BlackBerry-like smartphone with a rugged design and a physical QWERTY keyboard. The company’s latest phone is called TickTock and is a hexagonal rugged smartphone with two screens – one on each side. The main display in front, with an undisclosed size, has a U-shaped notch, while the secondary 1.3-inch circular screen appears to have almost been lifted directly from a smartwatch.
A Watch Face On A Phone
The TickTock is what one would get if a smartwatch, specifically its display, was fused to the back of a phone. According to the manufacturer, the display “supports all kinds of features that help you handle tasks conveniently.” Although vague, the main function of the screen seems to be to display notifications. When it is not doing that, a watch face is visible. There are 16 different watch faces to choose from, and users can also upload their own photos to use as a background.
Only a few details of the smartphone have been revealed so far and they include a 6,000 mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging, 5G support, IP68 rating, and Android 11 pre-installed. There are two cameras on the back of the phone – one on each side of the rear display – but their details also remain unknown for now. Just like its previous smartphones, Unihertz says its TickTock will also be crowdfunded on Kickstarter and there is a form on the website for interested backers to fill in if they want to be notified when the smartphone is listed on the crowdfunding platform.
