At the launch of Disney+ back in November 2019, most subscribers were talking about the vast library of old movies and shows or the debut of The Mandalorian. Flying under the radar was High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Those who watched it almost immediately fell in love for a handful of reasons.
One of the biggest is the music. The cast is incredibly talented both as actors and as singers. That allowed the show to deliver some great songs, whether they be original tracks or ones from the trilogy of films. With a new season set to premiere in May, it’s a good time to look back on the best songs so far.
10 Out Of The Old
Even those who don’t watch this series have heard about Olivia Rodrigo. That’s what happens when you have a #1 hit song. Her character, Nini, is like the actress in that she writes and performs her own songs. One of her best is “Out of the Old,” from the seventh episode.
The idea was that Ashlyn suggested Nini write something about herself instead of her relationships. That led to this song detailing how Nini was about to apply to a performing arts school and start focusing on herself. Having it intercut with sad scenes of Ricky calling his mom and Gina crying about having to leave made for an interesting juxtaposition.
9 The Medley, The Mashup
Sometimes, you don’t need one specific song to stand out from the rest. There’s a reason “The Medley, The Mashup” was actually the first single released from the show’s official soundtrack. It’s a mix of the most popular songs from the original movies.
However, they’re performed by the cast of the series, which brings it all together. Getting to hear the voices of Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie, and more really got fans even more into the show. The mix is incredibly catchy and showcases the vocal talents of the cast.
8 Breaking Free
While preparing to perform High School Musical in front of everyone, Nini and Ricky rehearsed “Breaking Free” quite often. It’s a memorable song from the original movies performed by Troy and Gabriella, so longtime fans were able to adore everything about it.
The actual performance on stage is what takes this over the top. E.J. stepped aside as Troy to allow Nini to sing to Ricky, who was in the crowd. The two broke the fourth wall of the show with a wonderful rendition. E.J. and Gina looked on proudly, cementing their turn from rivals to friends of the two lead characters.
7 Truth, Justice, And Songs In Our Key
Being a well-written, enjoyable song is enough for a track to land on this list. However, “Truth, Justice, and Songs In Our Key” stands out for other reasons. It comes at a pivotal moment for the show with some heavy emotional undertones at the end of “What Team?”
Miss Jenn was in trouble with the school board and her job was on the line. To get her back, the drama club put together a performance of this song in front of everyone, helping her to keep her job and convince everyone of the good that she did for all of them.
6 Stick To The Status Quo
Similar to “Breaking Free,” “Stick to the Status Quo” is one of the more iconic tunes from the original trilogy. That meant the show’s cast rehearsed it on multiple occasions but it really didn’t all come together until it was time for the big performance on opening night.
On its own, it would’ve been great. It became even better when Gina made her triumphant return with her incredible dance moves taking this to the next level. Throw in Seb stealing the show as Sharpay Evans and this was an easy winner.
5 All I Want
Before Nini decides to start writing songs for herself, a lot of her music indeed had to do with her love life. That includes, “All I Want,” which she wrote in “Blocking.” This came at a crucial time for her, as she had just split from E.J. and realized old feelings for Ricky were still there.
After nearly kissing, Ricky left Nini’s house and she sang this song in her room all alone. It’s a beautiful track and you can tell that Rodrigo poured her heart into it. She’s nearly crying with every verse and her unique voice makes it into something special.
4 Start Of Something New
Another classic from the original High School Musical movie, “Start of Something New” was one of the first songs performed on the show. It came during auditions when Nini boldly stepped up to try and land the role of Gabriella. This classic song was what she had to sing.
The lights went out and it could’ve thrown Nini. Instead, she belted it out with Ricky and E.J. using their phones to provide light. Getting to hear Nini’s huge voice is always welcome and the fact that she imagined herself in Gabriella’s famous red dress added to it.
3 We’re All In This Together
It’s difficult to pick out one song as the most memorable of them all from the trilogy of movies. However, there’s a good chance that “We’re All In This Together” holds that honor. That made it the perfect way to end the opening night performance.
The song brought the entire cast together and while the track itself is clearly strong, it’s the dance number that makes it shine. Everyone gets a moment and it culminates with the cast bowing to the audience, having succeeded in putting on a great show.
2 I Think I Kinda, You Know
While the movies are legendary for many fans, it’s telling that the top two songs on the list are completely original and only in the series. “I Think I Kinda, You Know” starts off as nothing more than a cheesy but cute song that Nini sings to Ricky on her Instagram profile.
The song is meant to be an adorable way for Nini to declare her love. Ricky ran from it but after summer, he sang it back to her for his audition. Although both did a great job with it, they’re even better in the acoustic version they sing together on YouTube.
1 Wondering
Ashlyn is one of the unsung heroes of the series and one of her finest moments came when she’s singing “Wondering” at the piano. It’s automatically a gorgeous song on its own and Ashlyn is great at singing it but when Nini joins her, it becomes the best of the bunch.
The two harmonize expertly and Nini manages to sort of freestyle into lyrics that match up to her relationship with Ricky, just as he walks in on them. Like the previous entry, the acoustic version is even better, especially since it features the four top female characters singing.
