The series has a fantastic comic ensemble but the second entry underperformed, so it there still a chance Horrible Bosses 3 could happen? The original Horrible Bosses starred Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis as three friends who work for the titular bosses. They cook up a scheme to kill their employers which goes wrong in a myriad of blackly comic ways.
While Horrible Bosses received slightly mixed reviews it proved to be a hit with audiences, grossing over $200 million worldwide. This is likely due to boasting a great cast, which also included Jamie Foxx, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston (Friends). The surprise success of the movie meant a sequel was quickly greenlit with Horrible Bosses 2 arriving in 2014. Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz joined the ensemble, but the sequel ended up grossing around half of the original.
While the movie underperformed it wasn’t a flop either, so is there still hope for Horrible Bosses 3?
Jason Bateman Says Viewers Weren’t Interested In Part 2
In a 2015 interview with Marc Maron, Jason Bateman stated the reason Horrible Bosses 2 failed to match the original is that audiences just weren’t interested in another chapter. He also admitted the sequel was something of a paycheck for those involved but that he also liked the final product and everybody involved tried to craft a fun sequel.
Jennifer Aniston Wanted Benedict Cumberbatch As The New Boss
During a promotional tour for Horrible Bosses 2, Jennifer Aniston revealed she and the main cast met Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch on a plane and they became convinced he would be perfect for the next movie. While it’s easy to imagine Cumberbatch as a fun villain in Horrible Bosses 3, this seems like it was more of a friendly conversation between actors than a serious consideration.
One gag that was sadly never shot for Horrible Bosses 2 involved the gang meeting with Jamie Foxx’s Jones, who ushers them away when he meets with a new group – who turn out to the group from The Hangover. While this would have been a fun cameo that also established the two franchises existed in the same world, it was decided it would be too distracting. It’s doubtful this would have led to a future crossover either, with the Hangover cast essentially ruling out returning for another movie following the third movie.
Will Horrible Bosses 3 Ever Happen?
Following the underperformance of the second movie, little has been heard about a potential Horrible Bosses 3. Comedy sequels, in general, tend to disappoint when compared to the original (Anchorman 2, Ted 2 etc) and while the cast would likely reunite for a third movie, the lack of movement on Horrible Bosses 3 suggests it won’t happen now. Like Jason Bateman suggested, just because a movie is a success, it doesn’t mean audience want another chapter.
