John Schneider explains how Alec Baldwin’s gun couldn’t have fired itself on the set of Rust. Schneider is an actor and country music singer best known for his portrayal of Beauregard “Bo” Duke on the CBS series, The Dukes of Hazzard, also starring as Superman’s adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, in Smallville and Jim Cryer in the Tyler Perry-created series, The Haves and the Have Nots. However, Schneider has recently been making headlines for his numerous comments regarding the fatal shooting that occurred on the set of Rust and Baldwin’s behavior in wake of the tragedy.

On October 21, tragedy struck on set of the Alec Baldwin-led Western, Rust. The cast and crew were rehearsing a scene that required the actor to cross draw a revolver and point it towards the camera lens when the prop gun accidentally discharged, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Production of Rust has been suspended indefinitely while authorities in New Mexico investigate the incident. During a recent interview with George Stephanopoulos for ABC News, Baldwin said he did not pull the trigger of the gun that discharged during the rehearsal.

Now, in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Schneider is disputing Baldwin’s claim. In the seven-and-a-half minute long video, the actor and singer demonstrates why it is not possible for a Colt revolver (the same gun that was handed to Baldwin on set) to fire on its own without the trigger being pulled. Schneider does not explicitly claim that Baldwin in being untruthful in the video. However, the demonstration does seem to be a direct response to him saying he never pulled the trigger. Schneider does explain a few scenarios in which the weapon could have fired incidentally, such as if Baldwin already had his finger on the trigger and he cocked the gun.

Schneider is undoubtedly an accomplished actor and musician, though it’s unknown if he’s had any formal firearm training or any experience that would qualify him as an expert in the field, so his comments should be taken with a grain of salt. However, given all the time he’s spent on film sets, he’s likely picked up a thing or two about prop guns and safety. For now, it would be wise to wait until the authorities complete their investigation into the Rust shooting for a definitive answer to whether or not Baldwin actually pulled the trigger.
