How Alligator Loki Was Created

Warning: SPOILERS for Loki episode 5, “Journey into Mystery”

Michael Waldron, the writer of Disney+’s latest streaming series, Loki, recently offered insight into how the comical Alligator Loki came to be. Loki has proved to be one of the most absurdist entries into the MCU mythos with countless incarnations of the titular character making appearances on the show. Alligator Loki is supposedly one of these Loki variants – an alternate version of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who hails from a dimension where Loki was born as a carnivorous reptile – although the veracity of this claim is still debated in-universe.

Episode 5 of Loki introduced audiences to the Void: a post-apocalyptic location at the end of time where variants pruned by the TVA are banished to. As Loki recovers from being pruned by Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), he is awakened by Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant), Boastful Loki, (Deobia Oparei), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), and the now-infamous Alligator Loki. The reptilian iteration of the God of Mischief serves as comedic relief throughout the episode, serving as the catalyst for a raucous brawl between a crowd of restless Loki variants.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Michael Waldron explained how the scaly Loki variant was conceived. Waldron revealed that Alligator Loki was one of the earliest ideas he pitched to Marvel “as an example of the [crazy things] we should be trying to do in this show.” Marvel liked the idea enough to support it from the early pitching phases all the way through to the final cut. Alligator Loki, that was an idea that was there from one of my very first meetings with Marvel. I think I cited that as an example of the kind of thing we should be trying to do in this show, which is just the craziest shit we possibly could but play it straight. And to everybody’s credit, they just kept “yes, and”-ing it – and the next thing you know, there he is.

Although some MCU detractors criticize the franchise for stifling creativity, Waldron’s statements seem to tell a different story. There is inevitably going to be some measure of oversight when it comes to working in any long-running franchise, but it seems that creatives still have the freedom to implement their wilder ideas with support from the heads at Marvel. Indeed, WandaVision and Loki have both demonstrated that Marvel isn’t afraid to experiment with more unconventional story structures and plotlines.

With Marvel Studios’ first animated series Marvel’s What If…? set to debut next month, as well as the fact that upcoming Marvel properties will be tackling more obscure characters and storylines, the MCU seems ripe for more experimental storytelling. Up until the past few years, critics have been quick to point to Marvel’s safe story formulas as the franchise’s greatest flaw; however, this has been less and less of an issue as Marvel hires visionary directors such as Ryan Coogler and Taika Waititi to helm their flagship properties. As the MCU trudges forward, hopefully new creatives will continue to breathe life into the franchise just as Loki is doing now.
