How Annabelle Comes Home Revived The Conjuring Franchise

Annabelle Comes Home was not only the installment The Conjuring desperately needed to save it after The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, and brought the franchise back to life.

The film, which has been compared to Night At The Museum, kept Annabelle at the center of the chaos that ensued at the home of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film’s setting, but introduced other haunted artifacts from the demonologists’ private collection. The museum, which has been closed temporarily due to zoning regulations and is searching for a new location, was started by Ed and Lorraine Warren and is currently overseen by Tony Spera and the New England Society for Psychic Research following Lorraine’s death in 2019.

Since the museum is closed, Annabelle Comes Home offered fans of both The Conjuring franchise and people who are interested in the Warrens a look at some of their most well-known artifacts. This was a huge marketing and selling point of the film, which ended up performing incredibly well at the box office, grossing $228.6 million worldwide.

La Llorona And The Nun Weren’t Strong Entries

The Nun (2018) and The Curse of La Llorona (2019) were the most recent entries in the franchise, and both performed poorly critically and with audiences, but La Llorona also suffered at the box office. Technically, The Nun outsold Annabelle Comes Home, but audiences and critics weren’t loving the spin-off based on the demonic Valak, who was originally introduced in The Conjuring 2.

The Curse of La Llorona didn’t feature the Warrens at all, and instead took the general premise of paranormal activity tormenting a family and used it to explore a different area of culture, taking from Hispanic folklore and building the story around a well-known tale used to scare little children. The Nun explored Valak’s history, and read like an origin story for the character, but didn’t really keep pace with other, much stronger films in the franchise and didn’t bring anything new or refreshing to the fold.

Annabelle Comes Home needed to reinvent itself after Annabelle: Creation, which performed well at the box office and was well-received. Since the scope of the film is somewhat limited, fans were skeptical about how the series could be taken in another direction, especially since Annabelle was in the Warren’s care. The script by Gary Dauberman gave enough screen time to the haunted doll, but knew when to pan away and explore other avenues, which is what ultimately put it a cut above the rest, particularly when released so closely after two other films in the franchise that were disappointing at best.

Annabelle Comes Home Opened Up The Warren’s Museum

Prompted by the curiosity of the Warren’s daughter, Judy, her babysitter, and the sitter’s friends, the spirits attached to many of the haunted objects in the museum are released and explored in this film. Though it seems like Annabelle is to blame for the strings being pulled in one direction or another, audiences were introduced to other paranormal entities that may or may not be explored in spin-offs or other such prequel and origin tales down the road. The Conjuring is a big franchise and Warner Bros. seems to show no sign of stopping it from continuing. The Conjuring 3 is slated for a 2020 release.

Some of the side characters who torment Judy and her friends include The Ferryman, The Bride, possessed Samurai armor, and a Feeley Meeley board game. The Ferryman is inspired by Greek mythology and appears to be in constant search of coins to collect; his wispy, shadowy presence results in a few scares throughout the film. The Bride is attached to her gown, which she uses to lure in other brides-to-be and, once they’ve put on the gown for the ceremony, The Bride possesses them and compels them to murder their groom. These two have decent potential to be follow-up stories, but Annabelle as the ringleader of this ragtag group made for an engaging, terrifying tale that is a hopeful sign of better installments on the horizon.
