How Ardal OHanlons DI Mooney Exited Death In Paradise Season 9

Here’s how Ardal O’Hanlon’s DI Jack Mooney exited Death In Paradise during season 9. Death In Paradise has proven to be a surprise success for the BBC, with the show debuting in 2011 and running for nine seasons and counting. The first series starred Ben Miller (Johnny English Strikes Back) as uptight DI Richard Poole, who arrives on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie to investigate a murder. The show proved a solid hit with viewers and thanks to its locale proved a good deal sunnier and more upbeat than most UK crime procedurals.

Ben Miller ultimately decided to exit after two seasons, with Poole himself being murdered in Death In Paradise’s season 3 premiere. A new DI named Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall, Love Actually) arrived to solve Poole’s murder and decided to stay on the island. Marshall stayed on the series until midway through season 6, with Goodman leaving the island to go back to London. Like Ben Miller, Kris Marshall left after a few seasons due to the logistics involved with being separated from his family while filming on location in the Caribbean.

Replacing Goodman on Death In Paradise was DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon, Derry Girls), an Irishman who had recently lost his wife when he was first introduced. Jack and his daughter Siobhan move to Saint Marie to get away from London while Mooney gets busy investigating the island’s unusually high bodycount. Like his predecessors, O’Hanlon decided he had been away from family for long enough and opted to leave the show during season 9.

Things were looking up for DI Mooney’s love life in Death In Paradise season 9 when he met artist Anna (Nina Wadia), she invited Jack to leave the island with her for America. While he was tempted by the offer, after a visit from Siobhan – who had recently graduated – Jack realizes he’s been essentially running away from his old life back in London following his wife’s death, and if he went with Anna, he’d still be running. She does promise to visit Jack in London when she returns from her travels, though, meaning their romance isn’t necessarily done.

Ardal O’Hanlon has ruled out any future return to Death In Paradise too, feeling the character’s story had run its course. In time-honored tradition, new DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little, Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps) soon arrived on Saint Marie to take over from Mooney. If the run of past DI’s is anything to go by, Parker should last for another three seasons of Death In Paradise before another DI comes in to take over.
