How To Power Down & Restart An iPhone 12

Apple’s newest phone, the iPhone 12, has a different restart process to that of the iPhone 8 and earlier model. Despite the process being different, it is still very easy to turn your new iPhone off and on again. Nonetheless, for those upgrading from an older model or for those who are new to the iPhone altogether, it’s worth knowing what the process entails.

The iPhone 12 was released in October last year. The iPhone 8 and earlier devices were able to be turned off through the use of only the button on the right side of the body. On those devices, after holding the button down for several seconds, users would be prompted to slide an on-screen button across the screen to power down. Users could then turn the phone back on by holding the lock button down again.

It’s different but still simple to turn off an iPhone 12. To do so, hold down the right side button and the volume down button at the same time. The volume down button is the lower of the two buttons on the left side of the phone. After a few moments, the power off slider will appear on the screen along with an option to view your medical ID, an emergency SOS slider, and a cancel button. Slide the power-off slider at the top of the screen, and an Apple logo will appear on the screen before the phone fully turns off. This method also works for the iPhone X and the iPhone 11.

How To Restart The iPhone 12

To turn the iPhone back on, hold the lock button on the right side of your phone until the Apple logo appears on the screen. At that point, just wait a few moments and you should be back to your lock screen. If your iPhone does not restart after holding down the right side button, try charging it for up to one hour and it should then be able to restart normally.

If your iPhone ever becomes stuck or has any other problems causing you to be unable to restart your device there is a way to force the restart of the iPhone 12 without using the screen. To force restart, quickly press and release the volume up button on the left side of the phone, and then quickly press and release the volume down button on the left side of the phone. Next, hold down the lock button on the right side of the phone until you see the Apple logo. This should trigger the restart process.
