How Black Ops Cold War PS5 & XSX Upgrades Work (& Why Its So Confusing)

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was recently revealed with a new trailer, and as many fans expected, this installment will be released on both current-gen and next-gen consoles. What many fans did not expect however, was the confusing process to buy a cross-generation version of the game. As usual with Call of Duty games, Black Ops Cold War will launch with multiple different special editions featuring in-game bonuses, and cross-gen access to the game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

With the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare last year, Activision made several permanent changes to the series’ gameplay. Starting with Modern Warfare, Call of Duty games will no longer feature random-reward loot boxes or premium map packs, and all post-launch gameplay content will be added for free. Another significant change was the addition of cross-play between console families. Now Xbox, PC, and PlayStation owners can enjoy playing in the same online lobbies together. These are significant and positive changes for the franchise, but they are part of the reason why pre-ordering a cross-gen edition of Black Ops Cold War is leaving consumers scratching their heads.

Luckily, Activision has published a support page that helps clarify this confusion. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is up for pre-order now with 5 different versions available: a current-gen (PS4 & Xbox One) physical standard edition, a next-gen (PS5 & XSX) physical standard edition, a digital standard edition, a digital cross-gen edition, and a digital ultimate edition.

What Black Ops Cold War Version Should You Buy?

For players looking to purchase the game for both console generations, purchasing the cross-gen or ultimate edition of the game seems to be the easiest route for doing so, however, those editions are only available digitally and only contain an upgrade for the next-gen console in the same console family (PS4 gives a PS5 copy, Xbox One gives an XSX copy). If a player is unsure whether or not they will be getting a next-gen console, they may purchase the digital standard edition for their current-gen console, and then later pay an additional fee to upgrade to a digital next-gen copy of the game (only for the same console family the current-gen version was purchased on).

For players who prefer owning physical games, both the physical standard PS4 and Xbox One editions will be playable on next-gen consoles via backward compatibility. Meaning, using the PlayStation as an example, a user may play the PS4 disc version of Black Ops Cold War on a PS5, but they will literally be playing the PS4 version of the game on a PS5. It will not have next-gen enhancements like faster load times, ray-tracing, etc. Likely due to Activision’s current partnership with Sony, only the physical PS4 version of the game can be upgraded to a digital next-gen version for an additional fee. The Xbox One physical edition can not be upgraded to a next-gen version. Xbox One players thinking about purchasing an XSX should buy the digital edition of Black Ops Cold War to receive their next-gen upgrade.

With this Call of Duty release, Activision is incentivizing players to buy digital copies. Not only are the digital editions of Black Ops Cold War easier to upgrade, they also contain pre-order bonuses that will not be available with physical copies. A digital pre-order of the game contains early access to a multiplayer beta, and a character skin for Modern Warfare. There is also the digital-only ultimate edition that contains some additional in-game bonuses to be used in Black Ops Cold War. A pre-order for a physical copy of Black Ops Cold War does not contain any of these bonuses; the physical edition is only being sold as a standard edition. So players looking to receive in-game goodies, and beta access, should also be pre-ordering digital editions of the game.

It’s not unusual for popular games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War to release across two console generations. What’s confusing about this installment’s release, is Activision’s specific rules on which versions of the game can receive a discounted upgrade. Now that Activision has published pre-order information, with a little research, it should be easier for players to decide what edition to buy this fall.
