With the upcoming release of Destiny 2’s Beyond Light expansion, Bungie has promised the addition of new Darkness-themed subclasses for Guardians to enjoy. Subclasses determine a player’s super ability as well as their grenade types, melee style, and other passive enhancements to their Guardians. Along with these new abilities, the Stasis element will also be added to the world alongside the Void, Arc, and Solar elements we see today.

Alongside these new subclasses come new mechanics not seen in the game ever before. Long-time players of Destiny 2 will know that changes to how players interact with the world often lead to major meta shifts in pinnacle activities as well as some often-forgotten aspects of the game. Revealed during Gamescom Opening Night, here are some ways that the new Stasis subclasses could change the way players engage with Destiny 2.

Historically, a Guardian’s best form of crowd control is to just kill everything before it can hurt them back. The best defense in Destiny 2 is a good offense. The most reliable form of control that Guardians have access to is the Hunter’s Tether ability which is their Super. Activating Tether ties enemies together and renders them unable to use abilities for a short time. This is fine, except that it requires a specific class and is only available once every few minutes.

Conversely, Destiny 2’s Guardians are subject to a wide range of different forms of control throughout the system. The Cabal Colossus units have the ability to blind and slow. Prime Servitors from the Fallen faction can teleport enemies high into the sky. Also, Destiny 2 Hive Wizards can cast a dark shroud around guardians that clouds vision and traps them inside a slowing bubble.

Stasis abilities seem to finally provide a way for Guardians to turn the tables. With the freezing abilities provided by Stasis, Destiny 2 players can root enemies in place allowing for large damage bursts without fear of retaliation. Guardians with keen eyes may be able to bottleneck enemy spawn points with freezes to maximize their effectiveness.

Multiple times since the official Beyond Light reveal, Bungie has shown new Stasis grenades being used to create ice walls that protrude from the ground. These can be used to create protective walls and improve positioning around enemies. This has the potential to drastically change how Destiny 2 players think about their environments.

One aspect of the game that often goes unnoticed is the small community focused on breaking Destiny 2 and finding its glitches. Often these appear in the form of holes in the environment and getting outside of a map to navigate to otherwise unreachable locations. Accomplishing these feats of platforming is usually the result of hours of work trying to find a way to get a Guardian over a particular obstacle.

With this in mind, the introduction of a grenade that literally creates game geometry is going to be wild. Destiny 2 players now have an entirely new tool in their kit for getting where they’re not supposed to be. Now players can make a new platform on which to stand, and create footing where there once was none. The implications are vast and it’s exciting to think about what creative-minded players will be able to achieve.

New Melee Abilities Will Shake Up Destiny 2’s PvP

One of the ways that Bungie likes to adjust the ever-changing meta of Destiny 2’s Crucible is through the different melee abilities tied to Guardian subclasses. In the last year, Warlocks have been given ranged fireballs, and hunters have been given 1-hit-kill throwing knives. These may seem small in the grand scheme, but their presence has shaken up player builds further than anyone could have expected.

There was one new melee ability revealed that again has the chance to create chaos among Destiny 2’s most competitive group. A new Hunter melee ability coming with the Stasis subclass is a throwing sickle that can rebound off of walls multiple times and still injure enemies. While we still don’t know how much damage this sickle will inflict, the ability to damage enemies without being face to face will greatly change how even the most cautious players engage with Destiny 2’s Crucible. It’s possible that there will be bonus damage applied for multiple rebounds, enticing players to get more creative with their angles.

Last year’s Destiny 2 Shadowkeep expansion did a great deal to change the game and keep players engaged over the course of four seasons. However, players were left slightly disappointed when no new subclasses were introduced as they had been the year before in Forsaken. Beyond Light is going even further by introducing an entirely new element for players to enjoy and many new associated abilities. According to the Bungie page for Stasis, more information about these subclasses will be revealed soon. The Beyond Light expansion is currently set to release on November 10th.
