How Endgame’s Scrapped PostCredit Scene Connects To WandaVision

A scrapped post-credits scene in Avengers: Endgame would’ve set up one of WandaVision episode 4’s most shocking Vision scenes. Kicking off MCU Phase 4 with their most unique storytelling yet was a bold move for Marvel Studios. WandaVision’s first few episodes looked and felt different than the usual fare from the franchise, which proved to be a challenge for some. But as it turns out, the MCU had initial plans to expressly connect the show to the Infinity Saga via an unused stinger.

As the Disney+ series slowly unravels its real narrative, it’s also beginning to mention events from the wider MCU, which are important to Wanda and Vision’s stories. Episode 3, “Now In Color”, referenced Quicksilver’s death in Avengers: Age of Ultron, showing that Scarlet Witch still mourns her brother. Meanwhile, episode 4, “We Interrupt This Program”, not only showed what the real world looked like after Smart Hulk’s reverse snap, but it also briefly featured Vision as a corpse – specifically, what he looked like after Thanos took the Mind Stone from his head.

Before WandaVision was announced, however, Marvel Studios was apparently going to tease it through a post-credits scene in Endgame. As revealed by Paul Bettany, there was a plan to show Vision’s corpse in a “sort of body bag drawer,” but before they could move forward with this, Kevin Feige opted against it, which disappointed the actor. Aside from confirming there’s more to Vision’s story past the Infinity Saga, this scrapped scene would’ve foreshadowed the most shocking moment in WandaVision episode 4, which was the sight of the synthezoid gray and with a glaring hole in his head. Prior to this reveal, Vision’s corpse hasn’t been seen since Infinity War, and considering that he’s fully functioning in WandaVision, it’s easy to forget the character is supposed to be dead.

The MCU didn’t invent the post-credits scene, but it popularized it in contemporary times, often using them to set-up what’s coming next in the universe as what’s intended with the dropped Endgame post-credit scene. While this would’ve serviced WandaVision’s storytelling, scrapping it was for the best given the circumstances. Endgame marked the end of an era for the MCU, functioning as the culminating film of the Infinity Saga, while Spider-Man: Far From Home was more of an epilogue. Not having a stinger emphasized this idea; instead, Marvel Studios opted to reference the franchise’s beginnings in 2008 with the sounds of Tony Stark making the Mark I inside the cave in Afghanistan in the first Iron Man movie.

So far, WandaVision has yet to provide any clues as to how Vision is alive. There are several theories floating around, including the idea that Scarlet Witch may have rebuilt him, but the appearance of his corpse in the latest episode may prove otherwise. Given this, Marvel could have repurposed the unused Avengers: Endgame post-credits scene to explain this mystery, using the scene in the show itself.
