How Iron Man 2 Survived The Same Issues That Ruined Batman v Superman

Despite being as crowded and rushed as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Iron Man 2 became the first stepping stone for the current success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man 2 was the MCU’s first sequel, back when ensemble movies like The Avengers were just a hopeful plan. It featured Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in a more prominent role after his appearance in Iron Man’s post-credits scene, gave Rhodey Rhodes (Don Cheadle) the War Machine armor, and introduced Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson). With these characters and the reveal of Thor’s Mjolnir in its post-credits scene, Iron Man 2 teased what would become an extensive cinematic universe. Still, Iron Man 2 is now one of the least popular installments of the MCU.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice played a similar role in the DCEU’s birth. It was the franchise’s first sequel and introduced key players like Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) in a movie that centered around the franchise’s main hero, Superman (Henry Cavill). Like Iron Man 2, Batman v Superman set up the superhero team-up movie Justice League and is popularly considered one of the worst installments in the DCEU.

The main issue of both movies lies in their overstuffed plots. Iron Man 2 had a lackluster story because its main focus was the worldbuilding necessary for The Avengers, while Batman v Superman crammed multiple storylines into one single movie just for the sake of setting up Justice League. But whereas Iron Man 2 only followed Tony Stark’s fight against Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), Batman v Superman’s story included the introduction of a seasoned Batman and Wonder Woman, the death of Superman, Lex Luthor’s (Jesse Eisenberg) contrived evil plan, the future arrival of the Apokoliptians, the public perception of Superman, and the first appearance of all the original Justice League members – all on top of the main conflict between Batman and Superman.

Besides the different levels of ambition, one advantage Iron Man 2 had was the novelty of shared cinematic universes back in 2010. Iron Man 2 was the first superhero movie to feature characters who weren’t directly related to the protagonist. Seeing Black Widow in an Iron Man movie and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) holding Captain America’s shield had an unprecedented impact on the audience, and the concept of the Avengers eventually coming together helped Iron Man 2 outlast its reception. Batman v Superman rushed to introduce the DCEU’s key players only two movies into the franchise, and did it in an era when superhero team-ups were already popular thanks to The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The worst mistake Batman v Superman made was killing Cavill’s Superman in only his second appearance. It took the MCU 22 movies to kill off Tony Stark, and only two for the DCEU to establish its super team and kill the face of the franchise at the same time. This summarizes how Iron Man 2 was the MCU’s setup for the future and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was the DCEU’s unearned payoff.
