How Manifests 2Hour Movie Could Properly End The Story

A Manifest movie could be the way to go to wrap up the cancelled show’s story, but how would that work? Not long after it was reported that Netflix had passed on saving the NBC series, Manifest showrunner Jeff Rake said he’s in the planning stages for a Manifest movie that would follow the season 3 finale. Based on what Rake said in an interview with EW, it seems Netflix changing its mind about Manifest is at least possible since the show has been topping the streaming platform’s charts for days.

However, it’s not a likely outcome. It’s for this reason Rake is looking for other solutions, chief among them being a two-hour finale. Like Rake himself pointed out, this idea worked for shows like Timeless, which received a two-hour special after backlash to the show’s cancellation. Rake believes that if a platform were to take an interest in pursuing it, an approach like this could work for Manifest, even though it’s already been confirmed the showrunner had a six-season plan for the series.

Scrapping the plan for three more seasons and replacing it with a single two-hour movie is far from an ideal scenario. Tying up all the loose ends in such a short period of time would bring several challenges, but there are ways it could work. While there’s a lot left to go into, it’s important to note the Flight 828 passengers have just one ultimate goal, which is “saving the lifeboat”, and in doing so, preventing the 2024 Death Date. The characters understand from what happened to Zeke that everyone surviving means they follow the Callings and overcome some great test. The assumption is they keep this up until their Death Date, but they could instead find out everything will come to a head in just a few days.

Manifest can speed up the ending by connecting it with Captain Daly’s unexpected return too. It was suggested he wouldn’t be back until 2024, but he inexplicably popped up at Eureka in the last scene. It’s possible through him they’ll learn their journey will reach an early conclusion. If that happens, the passengers can “save the lifeboat” in a two-hour movie, which could end with them going back to their normal lives.

Manifest can use this time to address some of the big events from season 3’s finale. While it would have been preferable for the Stone family adjusting to Cal’s sudden aging or Grace’s shock death to be multi-episode arcs, Manifest could condense these stories and turn them into subplots that can unfold throughout the series finale. As for the growing conflict with Angelina and Eagan’s rebel passengers, they could get defeated right off the bat, rather than let this fight get stretched out any longer. On top of all this, the rush to save the lifeboat can coincide with a deeper investigation into the history of Callings that leads to much-needed answers about what they really are.
