How Marvel Has Already Set Up Nova For The MCU

Thanks to the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel already has the catalyst it needs to bring Nova into the MCU at any point. In Marvel Comics, “Nova” is a title that’s been held by a small number of superheroes, but the primary version of the character is Richard Rider, a popular hero and a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Richard Rider has been associated with the Nova name since his introduction in the 1970s. Characters like Sam Alexander and Frankie Raye have also held the mantle. In the comics, all three are tied to a galactic peacekeeping organization called the Nova Corps.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe started laying the groundwork for it to have its own Nova in Guardians of the Galaxy when it introduced the Nova Corps on planet Xandar. Two of its members, Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) and Irani Rael (Glenn Close), played supporting roles in the Guardians’ battle with Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). At the end of the movie, the Nova Corps were entrusted with the safekeeping of the Power Stone.

Marvel’s decision to establish the existence of the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy led to further speculation about when Richard Rider would come into the picture and don his iconic helmet. Nova is one of several characters fans believe may be critical to Phase 5 and Marvel’s future in general. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige added fuel to the discussion by saying that Nova has “immediate potential” for the MCU. This suggests that the character may be rather high on Marvel’s list of priorities. But to introduce a character like Nova, certain events have to happen in the MCU. Fortunately for Marvel, they already have, courtesy of Avengers: Infinity War. Here’s how Marvel already set up Nova.

Nova’s Origin Story In Marvel Comics Explained

How Marvel Has Already Set Up Nova For The MCU

Richard Rider first appeared in 1976’s Nova #1 as a 17-year-old high school student. His perfectly normal life changed forever when he mysteriously collapsed during an encounter with a bully. Doctors couldn’t understand it when Rich fell into a coma, seemingly for no reason at all. What no one understood is that the circumstances behind Rich’s medical situation were actually cosmic in nature. What happened to Rich coincided with the battle between a warrior from outer space named Rhomann Dey and an alien warlord called Zorr. Rhomann Dey was the leader of the Nova Corps on Xandar, and at the time was believed to be the planet’s last survivor. According to him, everyone on his planet was murdered by Zorr. Having been mortally wounded and knowing he could never avenge his homeworld on his own, he decided to choose a successor on the same planet that Zorr would take refuge: Earth. Dey used his powers to send out a beam of energy that randomly selected Richard Rider to take his place as “Nova-Prime”. In a telepathic message, Dey told Rich that with his abilities, he would have the ”power to right all wrongs”.

Shortly after waking up from his coma, Rich acquired the helmet, costume, and powers of Rhomann Dey. As Nova, Rich defeated Zorr and saved the Earth. Over time, he learned how to control his powers and developed a sense of responsibility. After evolving and maturing into a capable superhero, Nova joined the New Warriors and eventually, the Guardians of the Galaxy. In later stories, Marvel retconned the destruction of Xandar and the Nova Corps by revealing that many of its people were saved by Uatu the Watcher. This led to numerous adventures where Nova was able to interact with members of the Nova Corps.

How Avengers: Infinity War Set Up Nova In The MCU

How Marvel Has Already Set Up Nova For The MCU

Avengers: Infinity War set the stage for Nova to join the MCU. In the movie, it was revealed that Thanos (Josh Brolin) collected the first of the six Infinity Stones offscreen. It was stated that he “decimated” Xandar to acquire the Power Stone. The presumption here is that the Nova Corps was wiped out by Thanos’ attack. Also, the notion that Infinity War set up Nova certainly wasn’t lost on the movie’s writers, Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. The two have said in the past that their original intention was to include Nova as the last survivor of the massacre on Xandar, but he was cut from both Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Though Xandar and Nova Corps were ultimately brought back, their destruction was integral to Nova’s origin story in Marvel Comics. If the Nova Corps hadn’t fallen apart in Nova #1, there would have been no reason for Rhomann Dey to make such a desperate move. He never would have been pushed to the point where he felt that the only way to beat his enemy was to give his powers to a random Earthling. Instead, he would have trusted his abilities with someone he knew from the Nova Corps. So for Nova to be introduced properly, it’s important that a similar fate befalls the MCU’s Xandar. Now that this has occurred, Marvel is free to bring in Richard Rider whenever it’s ready to use him. A young Rich could be paid a visit by Rhomann Dey, Irani Rael, or a perhaps an entirely new character who could choose him to carry on the legacy of the Nova Corps. It could be that at least one Nova Corps member survived the battle with Thanos and fled to Earth.

When Nova Could Appear In The MCU

Though Kevin Feige has expressed an interest in using Nova, there doesn’t seem to be any room for him in Phase 4. Marvel does have some cosmic projects like Thor: Love and Thunder on the horizon, but the story of Richard Rider becoming Nova feels like one that needs to stand on its own. For that reason, Marvel may put his MCU debut on hold until it can give him a solo movie, but when could that happen? Marvel has one unannounced movie scheduled to release in 2022 and four more in 2023. Some of these are expected to go to films that are already in development, such as Blade, Ant-Man 3, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. A new Fantastic Four movie was confirmed at SDCC 2019, so it could be in the cards as well. There are a lot of movies and characters that are Marvel’s radar right now, but it is possible that Nova will get one of Marvel’s 2023 release dates. If so, Nova could become a major player in Phase 5 and a driving force behind the cosmic side of the MCU.
