How Ms Marvels MCU Costume And Powers Compare To The Comics

Although Ms. Marvel seems to be aiming for comic book accuracy in many ways, it’s also making some changes to adapt the series for live-action. 2021’s Disney+ Day revealed first looks at many upcoming projects for the streaming platform including a short clip of Ms. Marvel, which is set to premiere in 2022. The MCU show follows the latest character to take on the Ms. Marvel mantle, a Pakistani American high schooler from New Jersey named Kamala Khan.

Kamala’s solo comic book series debuted in 2014 to predominantly positive reviews. Its first volume was the best-selling graphic novel in October of that year, and Kamala’s image has repeatedly been used since to help combat anti-Islam sentiments in the United States. This version of Ms. Marvel is an Inhuman who gained her powers after being exposed to Terrigen Mist, and has to learn to balance her new life fighting crime with her overprotective family’s ideals.

Marvel’s mostly failed attempts to introduce Inhumans into the MCU meant changes needed to be made to Kamala’s backstory, but first looks into the Ms. Marvel series reveal even more changes to the character. In the comics, Kamala strived to follow in the footsteps of her idol Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, and her Disney+ show seems to be further leaning into that connection to help set up the upcoming movie The Marvels featuring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. Here are all the similarities and changes the MCU has so far made for its Ms. Marvel series.

Despite her love for Captain Marvel, Kamala quickly realized in the comics that fighting crime while looking like her idol was probably not the greatest idea, so she made herself a costume out of a blue burkini, adding a yellow lightning bolt as a homage to Carol Danvers. A blue mask along with red pants, sleeves, and scarf completed the look, which her inventor friend Bruno Carrelli finalized for her using a synthetic material he designed himself that enabled the outfit to change with Kamala whenever she used her powers. The costume was a perfect mix of everything Kamala loved — the color scheme and lightning bolt honored Captain Marvel, while the burkini reflected her Muslim heritage. Although the first trailer for the Ms. Marvel series shows Kamala wearing what appears to be a home-made imitation of Captain Marvel’s costume with a helmet and red and blue suit, other promotional art shows her with something looking very similar to her comic book outfit, suggesting that Kamala experiments with her costume before eventually settling on what she wore in the comics.

How Ms. Marvel’s MCU Powers Compare To The Comics

The short clip for the upcoming Ms. Marvel series reveals how the Disney+ show aims to change her powerset. In the comics, the Terrigen Mist granted Kamala the ability to change her body, which she primarily used to enlarge her hands into giant fists to fight opponents and carry people to safety. She could also shapeshift into other people and heal herself when in her normal form. Deciding that those abilities would be difficult to adapt into live-action in a way that wouldn’t come across as body horror, the MCU has greatly changed Kamala’s powers for the Ms. Marvel show. Kamala instead will have powers that more closely resemble Captain Marvel’s, with energy manipulation that lets her construct an enlarged version of her hand as a kind of force field around her fist rather than enlarging her actual body. The Disney+ clip also reveals a window reflection of what could be Kamala flying through the air, implying that she has gained most, if not all, of Carol’s powers.

Some people have expressed concerns over the implications of altering Kamala’s powerset in this way, since her ability to shapeshift into more conventionally attractive people like Carol addressed her insecurity and was a large part of her comic book arc. Of course, few details can be known for sure until Ms. Marvel actually releases in 2022. Hopefully, the MCU is simply approaching that particular plot point through a new angle, adapting Kamala’s powers for live-action without sacrificing her character’s journey.
