How Onward Supports The Pixar Shared Universe Theory

Although all Pixar movies seem to not have much in common, with only a bunch of Easter eggs serving as link between them, a theory suggests they are all part of the same universe but in different time settings. Pixar’s latest movie, Onward, is set in a fantasy world full of mythical creatures, so how does it fit into the Pixar shared universe theory? The Pixar/Disney duo has been dominating the world of animation for decades now, and it all began in 1995 with Toy Story. Since then, Pixar has released a total of 22 movies, including Onward.

Pixar’s newest adventure follows Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley Lightfoot (Chris Pratt), two elf brothers who receive a magical staff with a rare gem on Ian’s sixteenth birthday. The artifact was left by their father, along with a letter with a “visitation spell” so they could resurrect him for one day – problem is, the spell fails and only the lower half of their father is brought back. The brothers then go on a journey to see if there’s still some magic left in the world that can allow them to bring him back entirely.

As mentioned above, Onward is set in a world where creatures like elves, centaurs, mermaids and more co-exist, so how does it fit into the Pixar shared universe theory?

Pixar Universe Theory: Onward Is Set Before Monsters Inc.

The Pixar shared universe theory suggests that all Pixar movies can be placed into one single timeline, and it’s all possible thanks to some careful organization. It begins with The Good Dinosaur, followed by Brave, where magic was introduced to the world through a mysterious witch with the power of bringing inanimate objects to life and create portals. Then come The Incredibles, Toy Story, Toy Story 2 (where toys are “unwitting conduits of power that feed off of the raw emotions of children”), Finding Nemo, Finding Dory, and Ratatouille, which prove that animals are still developing intelligence parallel to humans. Toy Story 3 is next, followed by Up, Inside Out, Coco, and the prologue of Wall-E, where humans had to leave Earth, which was then ruled by machines as seen in the Cars trilogy.

It then goes back to the rest of Wall-E and their efforts to restore the planet so humans could return. A Bug’s Life showed that the return of humans brought back “a spark to the world”, with bugs now rebuilding their own society. Then come Monsters University and Monsters Inc, where animals continued to evolve and eventually took over, but they still needed human emotion as fuel, and the doors are actually portals to the past. The timeline ends with monsters, humans, and machines finally reaching true harmony, but Sully exposed young Boo to the monster world, prompting her to find ways to find him. Boo becomes a witch with the ability to travel through time, meaning she’s the one from Brave, thus completing the loop. Now, given that Onward shows a fantasy world that mirrors the human one but with all types of creatures of which none are human, it can be placed between A Bug’s Life and Monsters Inc.

Onward would be the missing piece that beings to explain how humans were replaced by monsters after repopulating the planet. In Onward, emotions continue to be the driving force, and as there are still pieces of folklore in this particular world, it would be set many years before Monsters University, creating the basis for what would become the monsters’ society. As Jon Negroni points out, it’s possible that the humans who came back after Wall-E gradually evolved into new species or bred into what would become elves and other creatures (Onward even has its own version of Bonnie and Remy is seen working as chef), and then they might have evolved into monsters out of necessity. The Pixar theory will continue to grow as more movies are released, and it’s fun how Onward found its place in it while also serving to explain how the timeline jumped from one world (A Bug’s Life) to a completely different one (Monsters Inc).
