How Super Smash Bros Ultimates Minecraft Steve Sets DLC Bar SkyHigh

Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been the biggest roller coaster of hype since its launch back in late 2018, but the recent reveal of Steve from Minecraft joining the roster as part of the second DLC pack absolutely shook the internet. Minecraft is an extremely popular and well-known video game, yet, for so long, it’s managed to avoid representation in the Smash series. Now, its addition to the game has exceeded the impact of major characters like Banjo or Joker. The issue is that Nintendo has now set the bar as high as it can possibly reach, which means if the studio wants to see a similar reaction for the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter, it’s going to need to add someone extraordinary.

The Nintendo fan community has a collective breakdown whenever a new Smash character is revealed, and it’s happened even since Super Smash Bros. Brawl during the Wii era. Smash Bros. is one of the company’s most powerful franchises, so its massive popularity and crossover potential is enough to make any developer in their right mind want their character represented. It’s free advertisement for their games, and Nintendo has been adding third-party characters since Brawl’s inclusion of Sonic and Snake.

The inclusion of third-party characters truly started to take off in the Wii U and 3DS entries of Smash, though, with their lengthy list of DLC. Massive characters like Pac-Man, Mega Man, Ryu, and Cloud made their debut there, which meant Ultimate had some big shoes to fill. Nintendo came out of the gate swinging by bringing back every character that’s ever been in a Smash game, plus heavy hitters like King K. Rool, Simon, and Ridley. The first DLC pack included more significant newcomers, like Hero from Dragon Quest, Joker from Persona 5, and Banjo – a long-awaited return for the latter to a Nintendo platform.

Steve’s reveal dwarfed every previous reveal, however, because many fans believed it would never happen, regardless of Minecraft’s legacy. The game is still ridiculously popular today, to the point where most people who never play video games will recognize Minecraft and Steve. Banjo might have been heavily requested, but his fans consist mostly of those who grew up with ’90s Nintendo. Steve, on the other hand, represents a franchise mostly unrelated to Nintendo, added only because of the sheer power of its popularity. Developers even made sure Steve’s moveset is entirely unique, so he plays like no other character in the series. In order to recreate the same reaction Steve received, Nintendo will need a character with a reputation and moveset potential on the same level.

The biggest character that comes to mind in this department is Master Chief from Halo. He’s practically the face of the first-person shooter genre, and Smash hardly represents any of those kinds of games. Since, like Steve, he’s owned by Microsoft, Master Chief’s addition to Smash would bring a similar level of surprise as Steve, and he’d definitely please lots of fans. Other big-name characters that Nintendo could put out there would Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot, or even Kratos from God of War, if Nintendo could can land a deal with Sony. In the meantime, Super Smash Bros. fans can enjoy giving Steve a spin while they eagerly await the reveal of the next DLC fighter.
