Recently revealed concept art for Avengers: Endgame shows Thanos (Josh Brolin) finding a new way to destroy Captain America’s (Chris Evans) shield, and the artist has explained how it’s possible. Last year, Endgame brought the Infinity Saga to a close with an epic final battle. Ahead of all the MCU heroes who had previously been Snapped away returning via portals, Cap found himself facing Thanos alone in a truly thrilling moment that showcased Steve’s inability to give up on a fight. The brawl resulted in his shield being torn in two, though Steve was able to get his hands on another, equally iconic weapon soon after.

Endgame also served as Steve’s final MCU adventure. Fans knew he would be departing by the end of the film and wondered exactly how his story would end. In Endgame’s closing moments, it was revealed Steve had returned to the 1940s to live out a life alongside Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). The story decision was met with mixed results, with some fans feeling grateful that Steve got his happy ending and others criticizing his decision to turn his back on the present. Regardless of one’s opinions on Steve’s ending, however, few can say his final fight with Thanos wasn’t thrilling to watch.

Ryan Meinerding, the Head of Marvel Studio’s Visual Department, shared some initial concept art of Thanos fully destroying Cap’s shield yesterday. Today, he shared an additional piece of the same scene and elaborated on how it would have worked. Marvel fans know that the shield is made of vibranium, which is one of the strongest metals in the Marvel universe. Reducing it to pieces would have taken a lot of force, but Meinerding explained he “imagined that Thanos weakened the shield by a consistent barrage of crazy strong blows and the Vibranium finally couldn’t absorb any more energy and shatters.” Check it out below:

Another shield shattering image! I had imagined that Thanos weakened the shield by a consistent barrage of crazy strong blows and the Vibranium finally couldn’t absorb any more energy and shatters.

Thanos has proven to be one of the most powerful Marvel characters to ever appear in the MCU, which is an impressive feat when one remembers characters like Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). In his first proper MCU appearance, Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos was even able to pull down an entire moon from the sky. Granted, that was done with the aid of some Infinity Stones, but it still showed that Thanos was not to be underestimated. Breaking through a vibranium shield (even a weakened one) and smashing it to pieces would’ve had the same effect. While the image of Steve tightening the straps on his half-broken shield made an impact, it would have been shocking to see Thanos completely shattering the shield.

Fans haven’t seen the last of Cap’s shield, for while Steve might be gone, he passed on a different, not-broken shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) at the end of Endgame. Sam will pick up the shield in the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the meantime though, fans can go back and relive Cap’s brutal fight against Thanos and wonder what would’ve happened if the shield broke apart even more.
