How The Originals Season 5 Finale Ended The Show

Here’s how The Originals season 5 finale bid a fond farewell to the Mikaelson clan. A spinoff of The Vampire Diaries, The Originals premiered on The CW in 2013. Set in New Orleans, the series focused on vampire/werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) and his siblings Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) as they try to take back the city they built and prepare for the arrival of Klaus’ child Hope – the first-ever tribrid thanks to her mix of witch, werewolf and vampire genes.

Unfortunately for fans of The Originals, the series wouldn’t last as long as its parent show The Vampire Diaries and was canceled after five seasons. Luckily, showrunner Julie Plec knew the end was nigh and gave fans a final season to remember. There were some major character deaths peppered throughout The Originals fifth and final outing – like Josh, Ivy and most notably Hope’s mother Hayley – and the season finale was no different.

The last-ever episode of The Originals was titled “When The Saints Come Marching In” and picked up where the previous episode left off – with Klaus about to kill himself to permanently destroy the Hollow and save Hope. Just as he’s about to do so, Hope knocks him out and takes Klaus back to New Orleans with her Uncle Elijah so he can say a proper goodbye. Klaus’ old flame Caroline comes to New Orleans for one last farewell and coaches him on how to say goodbye to his daughter.

The Mikaleson clan gather for one last dinner where Klaus says his goodbyes and has an emotional heart-to-heart with Hope before heading off with Rebekah and Elijah to stake himself. Before committing vampire suicide, Klaus tells Rebekah that Caroline has the cure for her curse waiting in Mystic Falls. Freya, meanwhile, has managed to convince Vincent to be the father to her and Keelin’s child. The Originals season 5 finale ends with an emotional twist that saw Elijah informing Klaus he intends to die with his brother before they stake each other, destroying the Hollow’s dark magic once and for all and ensuring a safe future for Hope.

Though the season 5 finale marked the end of the show, it didn’t mark the end of the shared Vampire Diaries and Originals universe. A new spinoff series, Legacies, focusing on The Originals’ Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell), premiered in 2018 and is set to air its second season in October 2019.
