How This Is Us Season 5 Differs From The Original Plan (& Why)

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, This Is Us season 5 has slightly deviated from its original plan by including real-world events into the story. The hit NBC family drama starring Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia has never shied away from heavy topics – This Is Us has previously touched on the subjects of death, adoption, infertility, mental health, addiction, and racism. The writers of the show have always taken care to approach delicate subjects with sensitivity, and the season 5 premiere was no different.

However, the This is Us season 5 premiere was divisive among fans for its choice to work real-world events of 2020 into the story. In season 5’s first two episodes, “Forty: Part One” and “Forty: Part Two,” which aired together as a two-hour premiere, the characters referred to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and George Floyd, not to mention the protests sparked by Floyd’s death at the hands of police. Some fans believed that the show should have served as an escape from the stress of the year, but many other fans agreed with showrunner Dan Fogelman, who said that it would have been irresponsible to not acknowledge the events of 2020 (via CNN).

According to Fogelman, the major plotlines for This is Us season 5 will not stray too far from the original plan – the trajectory regarding season 5’s biggest developments will remain the same – but real-world events will continue to shape both the production process and stories (via EW). The creators of the show want to bring humanity to the overwhelming and at times incomprehensible events of 2020. This Is Us very decidedly takes place in the real world and the characters have gone through so many other realistic, life-altering hardships that it’s fairly on-brand for This Is Us to show a family navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and more deeply discuss Randall’s experience as a Black man in America. This way, the episode-to-episode developments may be altered to include the pandemic and protests, but the general track will remain the same.

Generally, This Is Us hasn’t directly shown characters reacting to major real-world events aside from the Vietnam War, which was a setting for many episodes of season 3. But for a show with a main character who is a Black man adopted by white parents, it would have indeed come off as disingenuous to skirt around the summer protests or the long-overdue conversations about racial justice happening in 2020. This Is Us season 5 will be all-the-more relatable because of its careful inclusion of current events. In the premiere alone, the characters experienced anxiety regarding COVID-19, the interruption of healthcare treatments, and varying reactions to the Black Lives Matter movement, culminating in a painfully true-to-life conversation between Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and his adopted sister, Kate (Chrissy Metz), in which Randall makes it clear to Kate that things haven’t suddenly changed – she just started paying attention.

This Is Us has built its reputation on being as relatable and realistic as it is dramatized. Though the characters are fictional, viewers understand the familiar sensation of watching something that could have only been written by someone who has lived through it themselves. This Is Us was already well-situated to address the heavy subjects at the forefront of everyone’s lives and the show will likely continue to make use of its platform by highlighting how its characters react to events they would not be able to realistically ignore.
