How To Beat Matador in Shin Megami Tensei 3 HD

The Matador might be the most infamous boss in the history of the Shin Megami Tensei series. A whole new generation of gamers will have a chance to lock blades with the fearsome fiend, as he’s back in Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne HD Remaster and still as powerful as he was on the PS2.

The main reason why Matador is so tough is due to how early in the game he is faced. There are more powerful bosses in Nocturne HD, but the player will have access to more items and demons by the time they reach them. There are also more places to level up the team after the Matador battle, as the player unlocks access to the Labyrinth of Amala dungeon after defeating him. As such, the player has to make the best of their limited options when facing Matador in the Great Underpass of Ginza.

The most important thing to take into consideration with the Matador battle is to make sure that none of the party members have a weakness to Force! If they do, then the player isn’t going to survive the first phase of the battle, as Matador loves to spam Mazan. A team that resists or drains Force will be extremely helpful, so use demons like Nekomata, Nozuichi, and Ame-No-Uzume. Give the Demi-Fiend the Hifumi Magatama, as this will let him drain Force spells. Hifumi can be purchased from the Manikin store in the Great Underpass of Ginza. Make sure to bring demons that have access to Sukunda (lowers enemy accuracy) and Rakukaja (bolster party defense), as this will make things a lot easier. A demon with Media (the party healing spell) is also extremely useful. Don’t be afraid to use Beads and Bead Chains in this battle, as this is one of the hardest fights in the game, and the party will need all of the healing it can get.

Matador can instantly max out his accuracy/evasion with his Red Capote ability, which means that he’s extremely difficult to land a blow on. Concentrate on using Sukunda to lower his evasion, even if it means passing to other party members. Matador can remove all debuffs on himself, but he cannot wipe them from the player. Spend the first phase of the battle hitting Matador with Sukunda to lower his accuracy. He will waste turns wiping debuffs and casting Mazan, which should be absorbed by the party.

Once Matador has taken enough damage, he will talk in a cutscene, signaling the start of the second phase. He can now use Taunt, which will raise the party’s damage, but will drastically lower their defense. He can now use Focus (power up his next attack), Beast Eye (grant himself additional turns), and Andalucia (a multi-hit party attack). The player should focus on using Rakukaja during this phase, otherwise, Matador can OHKO the party by combining Focus with Andalucia. Once the party’s defense has been raised, just pile physical attacks on Matador until he’s defeated.
