As has been reported here and there, Apple has launched its new iPhone 12, and, with it, come some new functionalities that Google’s iOS apps can use. It’s now possible to personalize the home screen with widgets, set a preferred email and browser service as default and use features like Privacy Screen to protect Google files. Although simple, these can make using Google on an iPhone a more seamless and enjoyable experience.
The iPhone has been one of the top smartphones since it revolutionized the industry when it was first launched in 2007, and the iPhone 12 is no different. Among its headline features are 5G connectivity, improved low-light photography and a LiDAR sensor. Despite Apple’s consistent innovation, one of the criticisms that has often been levelled at it is the sometime-difficulty for third-parties like Google to operate in or around its walled garden. While iOS remains a less open or flexible platform than Android, version 14 that ships with the iPhone 12 allows for a little more integration.
To begin with, widgets can now be added to the home screen, providing richer and more instant information at a glance. For Google users, this means the opportunity to add Photos, YouTube Music and Search widgets to their home screens, with all the additional functionality that they bring. The Photos widget cycles through a user’s Google Photos Memories, while the YouTube Music widget displays their recently played songs for easy access. Google’s Search widget, meanwhile, allows users to carry out searches direct from the home screen, and also provides shortcuts to different options for searching, such as Lens, Voice Search and hum to search.
Nuts And Bolts
While widgets offer some exciting new functionality, some other updates offer simpler, more nuts-and-bolts solutions. For example, users can now set Chrome as their default web browser and Gmail as their default email service. These may not seem like major options for Apple to provide – and, indeed, many would argue that they should have come sooner – but, for those who favour those services, it makes for much more fluid and integrated day-to-day use of their phone.
In addition, it’s now also possible to use a feature called Privacy Screen with Google Drive on an iPhone. Privacy Screen will hide your Drive files until, using Face ID or Touch ID, it can verify that the person using the phone is its owner. It is activated whenever the Drive app is closed or the user switches between Drive and different apps.
