How to Download Spotify Playlists

One of the best, overlooked features of Spotify is the option to download playlists. This feature sets it apart from most music streaming platforms, and it adds significant value to a Spotify membership. It’s also just a nice option to have in a wireless dead zone, like a hiking trail or an airplane.

While a Spotify Premium subscription does make it easy to listen to specific tracks of your choosing, playlists are the real meat of the service. Spotify’s musical curation is top-notch, and taking advantage of that perk means relying on pre-made playlists. Additionally, users can build and share playlists manually, or even open a public playlist and have friends add songs. However, without a connection to WiFi, listening to playlists means streaming multiple, high-quality song files over wireless data. Aside from the issue of those files creeping toward the monthly data limit, it also makes the service reliant on a strong wireless signal.

These problems and more are solved by downloading music from Spotify rather than streaming. Here’s how to do it

How to Download Spotify Playlists

To start downloading, simply open a playlist in the Spotify app, and tap the slider on the right side, just below the green Play or Shuffle button. This will start a sequential download of every song in the playlist to that local device. While it is possible to remove individual songs later, the best way to curate songs for downloading is to create a manual playlist and download that instead. To accomplish this, tap the menu button (represented as three dots stacked vertically) on any song and select Add to Playlist. It would make sense to give the playlist a name indicating its purpose as a basket for your downloads.

Advantages to Downloading Playlists from Spotify

The primary reason to download a Spotify playlist is the convenience of having local files. Poor reception and mobile data caps will no longer be a concern. This is especially beneficial for anyone invested in Spotify’s growing library of original podcasts. It’s more reasonable to download hours of recorded audio at home via WiFi than to stream it over mobile data.

Downloading can mean a better audio experience, too. In the settings menu, which is the gear icon in the top-right corner of the Home screen, there’s an option to select a quality level for downloaded files. The same can be done for streaming music as well, but Spotify defaults to Automatic, which will lower audio quality to save data. Downloading in advance, over WiFi, means being able to crank the quality as high as possible (or as high as the device’s storage space will allow).

Offline mode is another benefit, especially if the playlist is one that rarely needs adjusting, such as a workout playlist. This option only opens Spotify with local files, using minimal data and battery power. Offline mode is at its best coupled with a large library of downloaded tracks, so it does require some forethought, but it’s worth it to have a less-cluttered, always-accessible library of songs at all times.

While downloads do work for Spotify’s various curated playlists, like Daily Mix and Discover Weekly, keep in mind those won’t update while the app is in offline mode. Be sure to reconnect at times to update. Also, be aware that downloading requires a Spotify Premium subscription.
