Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Dynamax Adventures mode lets players catch Cresselia, a Psychic type legendary introduced during the Diamond and Pearl games. As indicated from the moon motif in it’s design, this Pokémon represents the lunar phase’s crescent moons. It’s capable of bestowing good dreams to people, as well as dispelling nightmares.
Cresselia is an incredibly useful in battles thanks to it’s amazing bulk that lets it wall enemy attacks. This defensive mon can set up protective moves like Safeguard to make it’s team immune to status conditions, as well as debilitate the enemy with moves like Thunder Wave. Further, it has a signature move, Lunar Dance, which allows it to sacrifice itself to fully heal an ally (though it does not revive them). Those that are looking for a competent tank to use on their team should consider tracking down Cresselia.
Defeating Cresselia in Dynamax Adventures
Though Cresselia could once only be found roaming around that tall grass of the Sinnoh region, trainers can now encounter it guaranteed in the Crown Tundra’s Dynamax Adventures. Unfortunately, each legendary that players fight at the end of each run is randomized, so whether or not Cresselia appears is complete RNG. Players that do manage to find it can save a record of their location and access it guaranteed in future playthroughs. They can even share the location with friends to make the legendary hunting process easier for them as well.
All players need to do to catch Cresselia is defeat it as capture rate is 100% in Dynamax Adventures. Doing so is easier said than done, as the Dynamax bosses are all immensely powerful. It’s harder to prepare for them too, as players can’t bring any Pokémon of their own and must rely on rentals for each run of the game. That said, there are a few tips to keep in mind to counter Cresselia. It has Levitate for an ability, meaning all Ground type moves will be nullified. Further, while Dark types perform well against Cresselia’s type, it comes with Moonblast, a Fairy type move that’s effective against Dark. If possible, avoid bringing Dragon, and Fighting types, as they are weak against Cresselia’s Psychic and Fairy attacks. Below are several choices that players should consider bringing with them to fight Cresselia, if the option is available.
Frosmoth
- Cresselia has access to an Ice Dynamax move, which will cause hail after it is used. Frosmoth’s Ice Scales ability halves special damage while hailing, allowing them to resist special hits better. Further, it has access to Struggle Bug, a move supereffective against Cresselia that will lower it’s Special Attack.
Froslass
- This frozen spirit can also take advantage of hail using it’s Snowcloak ability, increasing evasion in a hailstorm. Their Shadow Ball will also deal lots of damage to Cresselia, making it a solid offensive pick.
Glalie
- Another Ice type, this one heals every turn with its Ice Body ability if Cresselia sets up hail. It also has a few fantastic moves to counter Cresselia’s kit. Ice Fang has a chance to freeze the target and will be boosted in hail. Crunch is a Dark move that will hit hard against Cresselia and even has a chance to lower defense. Lastly, the move Steel Roller. This new attack removes any terrain features, which Cresselia will be setting up and taking advantage of.
Octillery
- This Water type has 2 useful attacks to debuff Cresselia. Acid Spray will help lower Cresselia’s high special defense, allowing special attacking allies to deal more damage to it. Skitter Smack, despite sounding rather strange, is a Bug move that will always lower special attack after it hits.
Bisharp
- While all Dark types are immune to Psychic, Bisharp’s secondary Steel typing prevents Moonblast from being supereffective. Icy Wind won’t deal much damage either, allowing this armored soldier to wail away with Night Slash.
