iCarly Reboot Is A Realistic Adult Show With Sexual Situations Says Jerry Trainor

iCarly star Jerry Trainor promises that the reboot will realistically portray the characters as adults and will include some sexual situations. The original iCarly was a popular Nickelodeon series that ran for six seasons from 2007-2012 and starred Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, Jennette McCurdy, and Nathan Kress. The series follows Carly Shay (Cosgrove) and Sam Puckett (McCurdy) as they navigate their newfound fame when their internet show, “iCarly,” becomes a hit.

The iCarly reboot will debut on Paramount+ on June 17th, with Cosgrove, Trainor, and Kress all reprising their roles for the series. McCurdy, however, declined to reprise her role, as she quit acting and isn’t overly fond of her previous role as Sam. The series will follow the now-adult characters as they revive their internet show in 2021. However, the fact that the show is no longer a Nickelodeon series and will feature aged-up characters has led some to wonder exactly how Paramount+ is adapting iCarly to a more mature audience.

Speaking to Page Six, iCarly star Trainor promised that the series will be more grown-up and will realistically portray the adult characters. Trainor wanted to clear the air after some fans were riled up over the fact that his character uses mild language in the show’s trailer. He reminds fans that the characters are adults now and the show will follow a more mature path, even including some sexual situations. Check out Trainor’s statement below.

It’s basically an Andrew Dice Clay concert. No, [but] we’re going to toe that line, you know what I mean? It’s not going to be super-raw … but yeah, there’s going to be sexual situations. And you know, I say ‘damn it’ in the trailer, which had everyone in a tizzy, but you know we’re grown-ups.

Kress also chimed in to confirm Trainor’s statement, admitting that the series is not specifically geared towards children anymore. He is excited that the show will be a realistic follow-up on where the characters are 10 years after the original series. Kress and Trainor’s statements align with the iCarly trailer that also reminded fans that the characters aren’t kids anymore with the presence of champagne and beer, and snippets of Carly and Freddie (Kress) talking to potential suitors. That iCarly is taking a more mature route is not surprising, considering the fact that its original fanbase is older now, too. As Trainor reiterated, the adult content will not be extremely “raw,” to ensure that families can still enjoy the show together. However, it will be realistic enough to appeal to the larger adult audience of the show.

Paramount’s adult take on iCarly raises an interesting discussion of how the revivals of children’s shows should be handled. In the 90s and early 2000s, Disney and Nickelodeon boasted some of their most popular original series, which are now being eyed for revivals due to their pre-established success and fanbase. However, as the original fans of these shows branch into their 20s and 30s, it raises the question of whether these reboots will adapt to their now-adult fans or stick to their previous childrens’ premises. Trainor’s statement comes just shortly after CW’s pilot for the Powerpuff Girls reboot appalled fans with its overly edgy adult content. Reboot series need to be particularly cautious to ensure they are realistically maturing shows, but not excessively or irrelevantly adding adult content. Hopefully, iCarly has found a healthy balance between realistically portraying the adult characters while still holding true to the original show’s premise.
