The hit ABC legal procedural/crime drama How to Get Away with Murder starring the brilliant Viola Davis had a medley of very interesting characters. The fiesty law professor-cum-defense-attorney Annalise Keating was, of course, the heart and soul of the show, but that didn’t mean that the rest of the characters on the show were any less beguiling.

Connor Walsh was the smart, ambitious, and arrogant law student who was one of Annalise’s infamous Keating 5. Although shown to be unscrupulous at times, Connor’s touch exterior proves to be a mere facade when he breaks down completely after the first murder of the series, that of Sam Keating’s, in which he gets involved by accident. He is also one of the few whose character goes through a significant arc. Here are a few details about him that fans might have missed.

10 Initially Named Patrick Donahue

Connor Walsh was written as Patrick Donahue in the very first draft of the script for the pilot episode of the Shonda Rhimes show.

Connor was not the only character whose name underwent a change. Laurel Castillo was called Laurel Wilding at first and the resident hitman of the Keating house, Frank Delfino was initially called a Delgado.

9 Connor Came Out At 12 & Inspired Dad

Connor was one of the lead protagonists of HTGAWM and an openly gay character. It was revealed that Connor had come out to his family when he was as young as 12.

Connor also told Oliver that it was only after he had come out that his dad, Jeff, gathered the courage to come out as well. Jeff then married another man called Ted after divorcing Connor’s mom.

8 He Fooled Around With Michaela’s Ex

In season 1, Connor hinted to Michaela that he had been engaged in some sexual encounter with her then fianceé, Aiden.

Connor and Aiden had been in boarding school together and it was obvious that the two had fooled around a bit, possibly exploring their newfound sexuality. Michaela wasn’t particularly thrilled to know that her fianceé had been sexually involved with a boy as a young man.

7 Connor Was Selected By Bonnie

In season 6, when Connor found out that most of the Keating 5 had been handpicked for some particular reason other than mere talent or grades, he got obsessive over why he had been selected in the first place, or more specifically, who had selected him. He found out finally that it was Bonnie who had chosen him.

Bonnie told him that as an abuse survivor herself, she was impressed by his essay on shutting down of a gay conversion camp while in undergrad.

6 Connor Tried To Revive Wes

In season 3, Wes Gibbins died in one of the most shocking deaths of the series. The group went through absolute trauma at the time and while each of them handled their grief in their own way, Connor was one of the most affected, apart from Laurel who was of course devastated by Wes’ death, and also injured in the fire herself, besides being pregnant.

It was then revealed that Connor had actually been inside the Keating mansion just before the fire broke out and the only one who had found Wes lying presumably dead already. He had even done his best to revive him, giving him CPR, although he was already dead at the time. This trauma made Connor highly vulnerable and he had a bit of a meltdown after that.

5 It Was Connor Who Called Wes ‘Waitlist’

Speaking of Wes, it was Connor who was the first one to start teasing the former by calling him ‘waitlist’, a reference to Wes being pushed from the waitlist into the final list of students.

Connor, when he started out, was, of course, something of a jerk, and also a topper in class, so it made sense that he would not let go of the opportunity to remind Wes he was not good as Connor, or even the others.

4 Connor Was In Therapy

In the flashbacks with Wes in season 3, when the entire group was trying to come to terms with Wes’s tragic death, Connor was seen remembering possibly one of the few times he had hung out with Wes on the college campus.

Connor informed Wes at the time that he had gone back to therapy, and it was like being a teenager all over again. It’s unclear who had forced him into therapy seeing how his father too was gay.

3 Actor Did Character Collaging

The handsome Jack Falahee who played Connor Walsh took almost as much trouble to perfect his art as his character would have taken before an exam.

Falahee has stated that he took to creating image boards for his character and did extensive collaging to get into the psyche of Connor as his character went through several ups and downs emotionally. Apparently, he was inspired by Johnny Depp to create the collage, although he found the whole thing too intense afterward.

2 Actor Doesn’t Discuss Sexuality

Jack Falahee has mentioned that he had been bugged countless times about his own sexuality ever since he started playing a gay character on screen.

The actor made it a point not to divulge is sexuality or discuss it; he found it bizarre that he would have to be asked about his sexual identity just because his character was gay. However, he did later state that he was in fact straight but an ally of the gay community and proud to play a gay man on the show.

1 Falahee Doesn’t Watch Steamy Scenes

Falahee has also stated that he found it awkward to film the sex scenes that make the series so sensuous. The love scenes are many in number and it is understandably uncomfortable for the actors to shoot them in front of cameras and a gaping crew.

Falahee stated that he never watched the steamy scenes after they had been filmed. Connor and Oliver had the most meaningful relationship on the series and had lots of sex, like lots of it. It would have been quite a task to film them at first although perhaps the actors got used to them after a while.
