Apple provides several unique methods of alerting an Apple Watch wearer to the time of day, including speaking the time or triggering a sequence of vibrations. Within the vibration options, hours and minutes are sent in a choice of formats such as Morse code. If an Apple Watch is set up with one of these alternatives, seeing the face is no longer a requirement to know the time.
The Apple Watch is a great way to keep in touch with what’s happening throughout the day without needing to take an iPhone out of a pocket or bag. Notifications show up with a cheerful ping unless using silent mode, which replaces the sound with a buzz to let the wearer know something new has arrived. Of course, as a replacement for a time-keeping device, the Apple Watch can also help the wearer stay on schedule by sharing the time of day in various ways.
There’s no need to wake the Apple Watch screen or look at the wrist to know the time if it’s set up for audio or vibration cues. Taptic Time is Apple’s name for its haptic feedback system that vibrates to signal the time. The Apple Watch’s time controls are found in the Clock section of the Settings app, which requires a bit of scrolling to locate. There are three options for Taptic Time and each will trigger a particular pattern of vibrations when two fingers are touched to the display. Speaking the time is possible as well and has a toggle switch of its own. Hourly chimes can also be set within the Clock settings with a choice of bells or bird sounds. The same settings can also be accessed on an iPhone by opening the Apple Watch app, tapping on My Watch, then on Clock, and finally on Taptic Time.
Taptic Time & Spoken Options
Apple’s Taptic Time is a little complicated but it begins to make sense after using it for a while. For those familiar with Morse code, that’s an easy option that will vibrate out the dots and dashes of the current time as if reading from a digital display. The Digits option causes a longer vibration for every ten hours, short pulses for each additional hour then long for every ten minutes. Terse is similar, although it uses a format that results in a shorter sequence. One long vibration for every five hours, short pulses for the remainder, then long for each quarter-hour.
The Speak Time option can be used in combination with Taptic Time if it is set to Control With Silent Mode. With this configuration, when placing two fingers on the screen, the time will be spoken aloud unless silent mode is on, which will mute speech and the time sent using the current Taptic Time settings. If Always Speak is chosen, speech will override the vibration option. An Apple Watch is still a time-keeping device and Apple gave good attention to this use, providing more than just a visual representation of the time. By exploring the Clock section in the Settings app, time can be spoken or delivered through vibrations, if the user wishes.
