How WandaVision Kept Evan Peters Return as Quicksilver a Secret

Kat Dennings breaks down how WandaVision managed to keep Evan Peters’ return as Quicksilver a secret. As Marvel’s first scripted show on Disney+, there were some high expectations surrounding WandaVision when it first arrived. The series had an unconventional start, as titular couple Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) settled down into the strange town of Westview and became the stars of their own classic sitcom. However, as each new episode of WandaVision arrives, the surprises get more frequent, and the action more thrilling.

WandaVision episode 5, which dropped two weekends ago, featured what is perhaps the show’s most shocking moment yet: The arrival of Peters’ Pietro Maximoff. Though MCU fans have seen Wanda’s brother Pietro before, he was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson then and was killed in Avengers: Age of Ultron. That Peters brought his Quicksilver from Fox’s X-Men movies over to the MCU was a stunning surprise, and one that has potentially far-reaching implications for the entire franchise. Peters’ casting on WandaVision was originally reported last summer, but it wasn’t clear as to who he would be playing, making his appearance a truly jaw-dropping moment.

Dennings, who plays fan favorite character Darcy Lewis on WandaVision, recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss the Marvel series. Kimmel couldn’t resist bringing up the Quicksilver surprise and how that led to numerous fan theories online. Dennings admitted “I still don’t understand exactly what is going on,” but then opened up about how Peters’ arrival worked on set. As expected, they kept it a closely guarded secret and took many precautions. Dennings said:

“Obviously, that was a massive surprise. I mean they kept it from me a little bit as well. I wasn’t sure what was going on. While we were shooting, they cloaked him in [this] thing, so no one could take a drone shot of him getting out of a van, or whatever it was. It was a big secret, but, they pulled it off.”

When it comes to major cameos like Peters’, productions often go to great lengths to keep things a secret. It sounds like WandaVision must’ve used some of the same tactics as The Mandalorian did while shooting its Luke Skywalker cameo from the season 2 finale: Keeping Quicksilver out of the script, hiding him from prying eyes, etc. Luckily, all of this secrecy paid off, as fans were dumbfounded at the sight of Peters popping up on Wanda and Vision’s doorstep.

While promoting the series, both Olsen and Bettany hinted at a surprise actor making an appearance on WandaVision, and some wonder if Peters could be that mystery person. His Quicksilver reveal was certainly a major twist, the kind that leaves the internet shaking. However, there are also several opportunities ahead for other surprises. For one thing, Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) keeps referring to a mystery scientist who can help her re-enter Westview; at this point, it feels like this guy has to be a familiar face. Of course, don’t expect Marvel to spill anything before it is revealed on the show. As shown with Quicksilver, they like to keep things under lock and key.
