Riverdale Things That Went Wrong For Betty Once She Started Dating Jughead

The surprising pairing of Jughead and Betty may be on a hiatus as of now, but it continues to enrapture “Bughead” shippers in the Riverdale fandom. The series may have leaped in time, but fans still want a reunion between the two unlikely Riverdale residents. It’s not hard to see why, since Betty and Jughead had sizzling chemistry, supported each other no matter what, and faced the world together.

No matter how cute they were as a couple, they had many flaws. The two had a lot that went downhill for them after they started dating, especially Betty. She had her own set of issues with her mother and her “darkness”, which only got exacerbated after she got together with the beanie-sporting author. Jughead upended several things in Betty’s world, some even irreparably so.

10 Altercations With Her Mother

Alice was a controlling mother, and her own past as a Serpent made her overprotective of her daughters. Her unhealthy dynamic with her mother was one of the saddest things about Betty’s life in Riverdale. So, when Betty started seeing Jughead, it created even more conflict between Betty and her, since Alice was suspicious about Jughead’s motives and his gang connections.

Betty already fought with her mother about clothing, school, and extracurricular activities, and Jughead became one more reason for Alice to nag and berate Betty about. Alice was trying to prevent her from a terrible fate, without realizing that Betty was old enough to make her own choices.

9 The Desire To Join A Gang

Betty Cooper was a straight-As student who participated in school and led a pretty cookie-cutter life, at least on the surface. She had some less socially acceptable desires, though, which led her to underage webcamming and even self-harm, and Jughead’s role in the Southside Serpents made her want to also be a part of the criminal enterprise that the gang was associated with.

The Serpents may have tried to clean up their act, but they were a gang at the end of the day. For Betty to become involved in illegal activities as a naïve teenager was not an ideal situation at all, especially as a Northsider.

8 That Inappropriate Serpent Dance

The Riverdale Betty differed hugely from the Betty in Archie Comics, especially since doing a strip tease in lingerie for an entire bar was quite out of character for the cherubic blonde teenager. In a bid to join the Serpents, she did the outdated ritual for women to join the gang, by doing a very inappropriate pole dance at The Whyte Wyrm.

It’s important to remember that she was underage at the time of this dance, and she performed for very old men and women, which included her mother and FP Jones too. Nothing about this is redeemable.

7 Had To Fake Jughead’s Death And A Relationship With Archie

There are many things in Riverdale that just don’t make any sense, but Betty’s involvement in faking a death and covering it up is right up there. It is not normal for a teen to do this, but Betty was so enmeshed in Jughead’s life that she got caught up in his Stonewall Prep drama. When things got nasty, she had to devise a method to prove that Jughead was dead for his parents and friends, which included a fake funeral.

As if the fear, guilt, and anxiety of being a part of a plan like this wasn’t enough, she then had to pretend to move on with Archie fairly soon which raised eyebrows and made people question her loyalty. A relationship that entails this is not a healthy one.

6 She Threatened Cheryl For Jughead

Fans would expect Betty to be sensitive to Cheryl after the trauma and grief that she had suffered because of Jason’s murder, especially since she and Cheryl have so much history. She showed no compassion for the Blossom twin, however, and went and threatened her instead to protect Jughead and his father.

This was a particularly shameless thing even for Betty, but she blackmailed Cheryl by threatening to release the video of Clifford shooting Jason in return for helping set FP free. Betty had no business interfering with the law, nor was it okay for her to intimidate an already traumatized Cheryl.

5 Her Relationship With Archie Suffered

Archie and Betty had been friends since childhood, and unrequited feelings aside, the bond that they shared was extra special and supportive. The fact that she was dating Jughead upset Archie (which wasn’t justified), but it led to a growing distance between the two best friends.

They were on opposing sides when the tussle between Southsiders and Northsiders happened, and they couldn’t help each other out of bad situations when they happened. Archie always talked sense into Betty when she was acting impulsively, but in the absence of her friend she got into some hot water, and vice versa.

3 Emotional Turmoil Because Of Breakups

They may have been a well-loved couple, but Jughead and Betty were a tumultuous pair. They were never quite stable, and the large number of break-ups and make-ups was emotionally draining for Betty. Jughead gave her grief for arranging a surprise birthday party, and broke up with her when she did the Serpent dance.

She also broke up with him on the Black Hood’s instructions, which couldn’t have been easy for either of them. Betty’s relationship left her exhausted and in conflict near constantly.

2 Got Cheated On

Jughead and Betty loved each other very much, but they were attracted to others too. After becoming a part of the Southside Serpents, Jughead started spending a lot of time with Toni, and they eventually kissed. He and Betty got back together after that, and he only revealed to her that he and Toni had had a moment after she asked.

Infidelity is not great, and there was clearly an expectation of monogamy for these teenagers. Unfortunately, Betty had to go through that experience after she started dating Jughead.

1 Her Escapades With Jughead Got Criminal

The two teens were an unbeatable crime-fighting duo, but so many of their investigations and cover ups were illegal and extremely dangerous. They sneaked around dangerous people and entered their property, broke into buildings, and blackmailed people to get information. Betty even registered a restraining order against Brett which he didn’t deserve.

Betty and Jughead started indulging in consistently harmful activities together, not limited to covering up murders. Betty could’ve been with someone who brought out her best, like Archie did, instead of the worst.
