On Wednesday, January 20, 2021, Joseph R. Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States of America – here’s how and when to watch. The ceremony will, of course, look quite different from years past, as the Covid-19 pandemic means that large crowds pose a public health risk. There have also been concerns about security following the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. With both concerns in mind, the Biden Inaugural Committee is taking precautions by limiting crowds at the U.S. Capitol (where the inauguration will take place) and planning a “virtual parade.” As expected, the inauguration (as well as events leading up to and following the ceremony) will be broadcast and live-streamed on multiple platforms.

Per the 20th Amendment of the United States Constitution, President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration will take place on January 20th and his first term as President will officially begin at noon EST. However, coverage of the inauguration will begin at 9:00 a.m. EST on most networks and opening remarks before the ceremony will likely begin around 11:30 a.m. EST if previous years are any indication. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be the first to take her oath of office, followed by President-elect Joe Biden, after which the virtual parade, performances, and other celebrations will commence.

Most outlets will provide coverage through multiple platforms: TV, YouTube, websites, social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Twitch, etc.), and streaming apps (Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, etc.). Inauguration coverage will air on television via ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN, PBS, Telemundo, Univision, C-SPAN, and MSNBC. Online coverage is also available through the White House website (also via YouTube) and the Biden Inaugural Committee website (also via YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and Facebook). ABC, CBS, C-SPAN, MSNBC, Fox, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and NPR will livestream the inauguration on their respective YouTube channels.

During the inaugural ceremony, Lady Gaga will sing the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and Jennifer Lopez will also perform. Andrea Hall (a firefighter from Georgia) will recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The first National Youth Poet Laureate, Andrea Gorman (of Los Angeles), will perform a poetry reading. Father Leo O’Donavon will deliver the invocation and Reverend Dr. Silvester Beaman will deliver the benediction. After taking the oath of office, Joe Biden will deliver his inaugural address. The newly sworn-in President will then participate in two traditions: the Pass in Review (a military tradition) and the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

According to the Biden Inaugural Committee’s posted schedule, the President-elect will then “receive a Presidential Escort to the White House. This will be followed by a “Parade Across America,” which will be televised for the American people and feature diverse, dynamic performances in communities across the country.” At 8:30 p.m. EST, a 90-minute primetime special, Celebrating America, will be hosted by Tom Hanks and air on the previously listed platforms. According to a post on the Biden Inaugural Committee’s official Instagram page, the event will include performances from Ant Clemons, Jon Bon Jovi, Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake, and more. Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, and Jon Legend have reportedly joined the lineup, with Kerry Washington and Eva Longoria also scheduled to make appearances.

The Biden Inaugural Committee has the inauguration schedule available on their website and has been posting frequent updates on social media. The team has encouraged people across the country to enjoy the inaugural celebrations from their homes to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and help alleviate security concerns in the nation’s capital. That said, the day will be packed with virtual events, celebrity performances, and (while continuing to take precautions) will continue many of the long-standing traditions associated with United States presidential inaugurations as Joseph R. Biden is sworn in.
