Walking Deads Indira Twist Fixes A CRM Plot Hole

The Walking Dead: World Beyond has addressed a bothersome plot hole regarding the CRM and its satellite community, the Perimeter. AMC’s second zombie apocalypse spinoff, Walking Dead: World Beyond, has introduced a diverse smattering of fresh settlements, from the mysterious Alliance of the Three coalition (Portland, Omaha, and the Civic Republic) to smaller (relatively speaking) offshoots like Nebraska State’s Campus Colony. Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2 debuts the Perimeter – a collective of artists already living in rural isolation before the outbreak began. According to its leader, Indira, the Perimeter was approached by the CRM to make a truce early on, and their agreement has held for the past 10 years.

In exchange for keeping away outsiders with toxic radiation signs and stern looks, the Perimeter receives food and supplies directly from the CRM. It’s a simple arrangement – but one that makes absolutely no sense based on everything The Walking Dead has thus far revealed about the CRM. Simply put, the CRM trusts no one and has no true allies. In The Walking Dead, Jadis masqueraded as the leader of a junkyard purely to avoid her true mission becoming known. Fear The Walking Dead has shown CRM troops executing civilians just for discovering the CRM is a thing, while World Beyond’s Lieutenant Colonel Kublek merrily wiped out Campus Colony and Omaha – two supposed Civic Republic allies. Given their distinctly unfriendly attitude, it seems odd that the CRM trust Indira and the Perimeter to protect their borders.

This anomaly is addressed in Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2’s “Family Is A Four Letter Word.” Following Elton’s discovery of a CRM medicine stash at the Perimeter’s… perimeter, the episode reveals Indira is severely sick, and requires frequent blood dialysis. Such machines are, of course, difficult to come by in a zombie apocalypse, but the CRM is happily supplying Indira with the treatment she needs… in exchange for continued unwavering loyalty.

The CRM-Perimeter relationship now tallies with everything The Walking Dead has revealed previously about the franchise’s overarching black-clad big bads. The bond of trust is built upon blackmail, rather than the golden glowing goodness of Kublek’s heart. The CRM can feel assured Indira will toe the line, otherwise she’ll be deprived of the medical treatment keeping her alive, leaving Asha and Dev orphaned. Not only that, but Indira’s little arrangement with the CRM has been kept secret from the other Perimeter residents, meaning Kublek could easily have another leader installed if Indira causes trouble.

Walking Dead viewers have seen the CRM use blackmail as a weapon before. Elizabeth allowed the Bennett sisters and Felix to survive only because the CRM already held their father, Dr. Leo Bennett, as a de facto hostage. Additionally, World Beyond recently confirmed Huck’s undercover operation was penance for some unknown crime committed by her husband, Dennis. Again, the CRM is exploiting a person’s weaknesses to manufacture their trust. As Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2 continues, more instances of the CRM having emotional holds over characters may come to light. Does Jadis stay loyal because of a loved one being threatened? Or could Lieutenant Colonel Kublek herself have been compromised into obedience because of Huck’s subordination?
