The Most Badass Spawn Returns With a Vengeance

When Al Simmons made the deal with the demon Malebolgia to become a Hellspawn in Hell’s army, the anti-hero called Spawn would eventually learn that he was not the first but the latest Hellspawn in a tradition that spanned human history. Recently Spawn creator Todd McFarlane announced on Twitter that one of those Hellspawn would stay put in the upcoming Spawn #309, the returning warrior known as Gunslinger Spawn.

Although his first official appearance would be in Spawn #119 alongside other historical Hellspawn, the Gunslinger Spawn’s origin story was fleshed out later in Spawn #174-175. In a story by David Hine, Bing Casino, Gerrod Van Dyke, and Tom Orzechowski, he was originally Jeremy Winston, a former preacher who was framed for the murder of his family. Imprisoned alongside Al Simmons’ ancestor Francis Parker, both men were approached by the demon Mammon, on the behalf of the demon Malebolgia, who offered them the chance for revenge in exchange for their soul. While Francis refused, Jeremy accepted and Mammon did come through on his end although after Jeremy had already been hanged, his last moments accepting Mammon’s deal and swearing vengeance on the entire town of Bane, Colorado. Resurrected as that generations’ Hellspawn, the undead gunslinger got right to work by brutally executing not only the men he blamed for his family’s death but every single citizen regardless of their age or innocence. Horrified by the slaughter and evil he witnessed, Francis remained the sole survivor, left alive by Mammon who foresaw that Francis’ (who would later change his name to Henry Simmons) bloodline would eventually produce one of the greatest Hellspawn ever known.

The Gunslinger Spawn hasn’t made an appearance since then until Todd McFarlane posted on Twitter that the character, whom he stated wouldn’t just be on variant covers of Spawn, would also be a part of the upcoming ‘Consequences of Sin’ story-line. He included two pages of art from current artist Ken Lashley, as seen below.

Appearing near the end of Spawn #308, Gunslinger Spawn’s emergence is due to recent events that have opened a portal in time that has allowed other Hellspawn to emerge. The Gunslinger was seen previously occupying a host body surrounded by corpses at a bar in New Mexico where his inner monologue and drink were interrupted by Spawn’s former ally and mentor Cogliostro. Hinting at the horrible fate of the city he originally arrived in, Cogliostro reminds this Hellspawn that his power is dwindling and with Heaven and Hell not looking to deal with another Hellspawn, he owes it to himself to put that power to good use. Spawn has already confronted and defeated his older predecessor Medieval Spawn and one can only imagine how he’ll fare against a time-displaced Gunslinger Spawn with killer aim and questions of his own, who may be just another player in the eternal war of good vs. evil.

Spawn #309 written by Todd McFarlane and drawn by Ken Lashley will be published on August 26th, 2020. The issue will feature a Medieval Spawn cover by artist Francesco Mattina, a variant Gunslinger Spawn cover by Todd McFarlane, and an additional Modern Spawn variant cover by Gerardo Zaffino.
