How WWDITS Season 3 Finale Twist Will Affect Season 4

WARNING: The following contains SPOILERS for What We Do In The Shadows season 3

What We Do in the Shadows executive producer Paul Simms breaks down the season 3 finale Colin Robinson twist, teasing its ramifications moving forward. Based on the eponymous 2014 Kiwi-cult film by Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement, What We Do in the Shadows began airing on FX in 2019. The show follows a new crop of vampiric roommates in Staten Island – Kayvan Novak’s Nandor, Matt Berry’s Laszlo, Natasia Demetriou’s Nadja, and Mark Proksch’s Colin Robinson – as they, along with Nandor’s human familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) navigate their immortal life in a modern world, coming across various other supernatural creatures. Overall, the series has been quite well received; season 3 holds a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and season 4 was ordered even before the previous one aired.

What We Do in the Shadows wrapped up its third season with an explosive finale episode 310 “The Portrait.” First, as teased in the promo, Nandor leaves Staten Island to pursue a new journey of self-discovery. Nadja also leaves for London to take up a prestigious position at the Supreme Vampiric Council, and although she expects her husband Laszlo to join her, he ditches her at the last moment and instead tricks Guillermo to go on the journey with her by locking him up in his coffin. Later, in a letter to Nadja, Laszlo explains why he made the decision to stay back. And that was because he discovered that a baby, bearing Colin’s face, had burst out of Colin Robinson’s dead body, so he needed to be in Staten Island to take care of him.

Now, in a conversation with Deadline, What We Do in the Shadows EP Paul Simms has elaborated on that finale cliffhanger, explaining what baby Colin Robinson’s arc would look like in season 4. Simms says that fans shouldn’t expect the baby to suddenly grow into an adult Colin Robinson again. Rather in season 4, audiences will see the baby mature gradually, and drain energy in its own ways, which may be through crying or loud noises. Read what he said below:

“I will say, yes, he’s a baby. We’re not going to be cheap and rip people off and go like, “Well, guess what? I grew up overnight.” Almost the entirety of Season 4 is about him maturing and sort of imagination of the fact that as much as we love them, children can also be energy vampires because they make a lot of noise and talk about a lot of boring stuff.”

While fans are naturally expecting Colin Robinson to transform into an energy vampire eventually, Simms says that isn’t necessarily the case. The conundrum in What We Do in the Shadows season 4, as Simms explains, is about “nature vs. nurture.” Since Laszlo is now in charge of parenting, he will try to raise the baby “into a different creature than what he was.” This way the new Colin might even succeed in evading his fate, and he could also become a more interesting version of himself. But that is something audiences will only get to know for sure when season 4 unfolds, as Colin’s upbringing will be a key plotline in the new show.

While some may disagree, if What We Do in the Shadows would have pulled a fake-out with Colin’s death, it would have been a major disservice to fans. True, the decision to kill off the dull-but-ridiculously amusing energy vampire was a bold one on part of the show, but the way the makers handled that track was undeniably intelligent and it imbued a new sense of refreshing energy to the series. No one had expected a windbag, irritable Laszlo to end up taking care of the annoying Colin Robinson in baby form, yet What We Do in the Shadows made that happen, and as the plotline unravels in the coming season, it will inevitably deliver some hilarious punches.
