Huawei Found Easier Way To Detect Blood Pressure In The Smartwatch’s Strap

Huawei is prepping to launch its next smartwatch three days from now, and as per a leaked tutorial, its blood pressure monitoring hardware will sit in the strap instead of the main watch module. The troubled Chinese smartphone maker has already given an official glimpse of the Huawei Watch D and has also confirmed that it will indeed support blood pressure monitoring. However, Huawei is not the first brand to offer the aforementioned capability on a consumer smartwatch.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch3 and Galaxy Watch Active2 already come armed with blood pressure monitoring hardware that is functional in over 30 countries following medical clearance. The blood pressure is measured with a pulse wave analysis method that collects data using the onboard heart rate sensors. However, users must calibrate their smartwatch using a standard over-the-counter blood pressure measurement kit.

Huawei apparently wants to eliminate the need for buying a medical-grade blood pressure measurement gear by putting all the requisite hardware inside a specialized strap. As per an alleged user guide video that was shared on YouTube, it appears that Huawei will offer a specialized strap attachment that will latch onto the grooves on the inner side of the standard strap. Once it has been clasped firmly and the feature has been activated, the specialized strap inflates to tightly grip around the wrist. After setting it all up, users will be required to lift their hand and put it close to their chest, laying still for a while until the blood pressure reading is taken. It is far more convenient than what Samsung asks, and from the rumors that have surfaced so far, Apple appears to be going down Samsung’s route as well.

A Solid Package For Health Freaks

Huawei has confirmed via its official Weibo handle in China that its upcoming smartwatch has been certified as a Class II Medical Device for its blood pressure measurement capability by the China Food and Drug Administration. It’s a ministerial-level regulatory agency that supervises food and drug safety as well as medical devices. So, in a nutshell, the Huawei Watch D won’t be stuck in a regulatory approval hell and will offer blood pressure measurement capability outside the box. On the other hand, Samsung had to roll out the EKG (Electrocardiogram) and blood pressure measurement features in phases as it awaited medical approval for it in different countries.

As for the rest of the package, the Huawei Watch D looks terrific, thanks to its thick all-metal build that slopes alongside the edges and the cool gunmetal grey tone. On the right edge, there’s a dedicated Health button sitting alongside the Home button. As per an official product listing on Chinese e-commerce platform Vmall, ECG monitoring à la the Apple Watch will also be a part of the package. The smartwatch will make its debut alongside the Huawei P50 Pocket clamshell foldable that looks more like a high-fashion accessory and aims to steal some thunder from the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 that has sold like hotcakes.
