I Know What You Did Last Summer How The Show’s Deadly Secret Is Different

Warning: This post contains spoilers for I Know What You Did Last Summer.

I Know What You Did Last Summer made a lot of changes to its story in a bid to separate itself from the 1997 film of the same name, and here’s how the Amazon show’s deadly secret is also different. When a group of teenagers drive away from their high school graduation party, they change the course of their lives after hitting someone in the road with their car. That someone turns out to be Lennon, Allison’s twin sister, and the secret they keep after disposing of her body isn’t limited to their circle.

In addition to keeping the secret of Lennon’s death, the teens — Allison (masquerading as Lennon), Johnny, Dylan, Riley, and Margot — also lie about what happened to her, claiming “Allison” ran away because she couldn’t be in her life anymore. That’s a big change to the secret simply due to the characters having known Lennon personally. In the film, I Know What You Did Last Summer’s characters didn’t tell anyone about what happened. However, the series sees Allison confessing to her father, Bruce, about the accident, what they did to Lennon’s body, and how the deceased twin’s friends were still under the impression that she was Lennon.

This alters the story entirely, with Bruce aiding his daughter in hiding her identity, and writing Lennon’s note to fuel the story behind “Allison” running away from home. In this instance, Bruce is the only one who truly knows both of Allison’s secrets, which raises the emotional and personal stakes in more ways than one. His involvement in the deadly secret offers a fresh take and gives the I Know What You Did Last Summer series a twist that is unlike the ‘90s film. What’s interesting here is that the others who were there on the night of the accident have no idea that Bruce is in the know about what they did, which ramps up the intensity regarding their reactions when (and if) they eventually find out.

The fact that Bruce is involved with Lyla, the local police chief, makes the secret-keeping all the more layered. Their relationship and closeness means she could find out at any moment, too, and that puts Allison and the others in a much tighter spot, with the reality of what they’d done threatening to be revealed at every turn. In 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, the secret was far more contained than it is in the Amazon series, with only the four friends at the center knowing exactly what happened the night of the accident. The lack of others knowing about their deadly actions meant they had no one else to lean on but each other, which is something the show removed entirely due to the difference in its handling of the big secret at the center.

I Know What You Did Last Summer season 1’s fourth episode revealed there are a lot more players involved than previously believed, with Clara not only knowing Bruce, but holding onto Lennon’s body for a while before she was found. Suffice it to say that with so many external factors affecting the deadly secret, 2021’s I Know What You Did Last Summer heightens the tension and stakes for Allison and Lennon’s friends.
