Many believe that Sima Taparia is the hero of Indian Matchmaking. But the more one reads or discusses the show, the more they realize that the real star of the Netflix show is its editing. The expressions of participants, the quotable dialogues, the fact that some cast members look villainous when compared to the angelic others – it all boils down to the final edit. But it’s this very editing of Indian Matchmaking that Ravi Guru Singh seems to have a problem with. Nadia’s failed match Ravi called out the reality show’s producers for making him look “uninterested” on screen.
In Indian Matchmaking, thirty-two-year-old Nadia Jagessar, a wedding planner from New Jersey, wants a husband who will accept Guyanese roots. Matchmaker Sima Taparia suggests another Guyanese she has in her kitty of biodatas: Ravi Guru Singh, a lawyer from New York. She thinks that the Guyana factor will add a spark of chemistry to their first date, and the two decide to meet for brunch at a local restaurant. But the chemistry doesn’t sizzle between the pair and the show’s editing makes Ravi Guru Singh appear lukewarm throughout the date. Now, Ravi Guru Singh took to Instagram to share his side of the Indian Matchmaking story, but the details he reveals threaten to take the realness out of the reality show.
In a scene-by-scene reaction video of his date on Indian Matchmaking, Ravi Guru Singh disclosed quite a lot of juicy secrets. In the video, posted by the lawyer on his YouTube channel, Guru revealed how the date was actually paid for by the Netflix/production team. He only pretended to pay for his brunch. “I wish I’d gotten more food for me, take some food home, take some food for the family,” regretted Guru jokingly. He then called out Sima for her belief that two Guyanese people would instantly click just because they belong to the same ethnicity. But he simultaneously confessed to actually being interested in Nadia’s conversation about Guyana, which was allegedly edited to look like he wasn’t engaged. He further clarified that he ordered orange juice because he was trying to avoid alcohol, as his dad was an alcoholic, a fact Sima knew. “I’m not opposed to drinking but I don’t want to say anything stupid or slur my words on TV,” added Guru. You can watch the full reaction video below:
Guru continued his breakdown of the date, moving onto the next weird situation. There was a tense moment during his date with Nadia where she orders meat. “I’m trying to be spiritual, my grandparents are watching this and they’re going to be really upset,” he confessed and let out that Sima, again, was aware of the fact. “They’re setting it up,” Guru accused the team before telling viewers there were about 30 minutes of conversation between him and Nadia before the cameras started rolling, which later made it look like he wasn’t enjoying her company. The Indian Matchmaking member disclosed that at the end of the day, Nadia was definitely interested as they “ended up exchanging information,” but a conversation about AOC turned out to be a dealbreaker for him. Guru compared Nadia, who was apparently a bartender before she got into event planning, to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who famously was a bartender before she was a member of Congress. “She asked, ‘Who’s AOC?’ and I said ‘Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,’ and she had no idea who that was,” alleged Guru about another chunk of the date that was chopped off in the final edit of Indian Matchmaking.
Throughout his date with Nadia, Guru certainly looked bored and disengaged. Yet none of Nadia’s subsequent matches resulted in a happily ever after. Does this prove that Sima Taparia’s skills have a zero success rate? Or did the heavy-duty editing of Indian Matchmaking serve viewers with scripted dates that weren’t even meant to last?
