Infinity Train may have picked up and dropped off its last passengers, but series creator Owen Dennis still knows where it might have gone had the series continued.

In an interview with Inverse, Dennis was asked about ideas that would have been explored in later seasons of the show. One of his ideas would be to partially set a story off of the titular train. “It’d be interesting to see someone that has lived on the train for a year or so,” Dennis said. “When they return, their family is shocked to see them alive. What would that do to a person? That’s messed up enough to possibly get you sent back onto the Infinity Train, creating an endless loop!”

Debuting in Aug. 2019, Infinity Train is an anthology sci-fi series. Each season follows a different set of protagonists (referred to as “passengers”) as they explore a never-ending train where every car is its own pocket universe with its own denizens to meet, puzzles to solve and threats to overcome. The only way to escape the train and return to the real world is to reach a point of personal introspection and emotional growth, which creates a portal that can bring the passenger back home.

“I also really wanted to explore the Hazel and Amelia story,” Dennis continued. “We knew exactly how it was going to end – it was bittersweet and beautiful. It would’ve happened in a few seasons.” Debuting in the show’s first season, Amelia Hughes is one of the few characters to recur from season to season. She is a young widow grieving the loss of her fiance upon boarding the train, but rather than learn or grow, she uses her technological know-how to usurp leadership of the train from the benevolent robot One-One, an act which has had lasting effects across the show’s mythos. Among these is Hazel, a failed attempt by Amelia to use the train’s power to recreate her fiance who develops a personality and identity all her own.

“We also wrote a movie about Amelia’s rise to power,” Dennis added, “But they didn’t wanna greenlight it. It was about a grown woman grieving for her fiancé and not about a kid, so they thought kids wouldn’t like it.” In a prior interview with CBR, he went into more detail, saying, “We actually wrote a whole script for a movie that was going to run parallel to and fill in the gaps found in Season 4.” The most recent season, subtitled Duet, is a prequel taking place in the mid-’80s, with best friends and aspiring musicians Min-Gi and Ryan navigating the train. They witness the struggle happening between One-One and Amelia but only in fragments, while the audience is privy to the larger implications of the subplot.

“I’m confident that teen and adult-oriented animation will be popular soon,” Dennis said. “Hopefully, someone will realize that’s what our show was targeting, so we can make the movie. We were also considering a season with an older Tulip that would’ve been really fun. But we would’ve likely been unable to get that greenlit for similar reasons.” Tulip Olsen was the protagonist of Infinity Train’s first season, a teenage game designer who acts as the audience surrogate.

Created by Owen Dennis, Infinity Train stars Ashley Johnson, Jeremy Crutchley, Owen Dennis, Ernie Hudson, Kate Mulgrew, Lena Headey, Robbie Daymond, Bradley Whitford, Ben Mendelsohn, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Kyle McCarley, Isabella Abiera, Diane Delano, Johnny Young, Sekai Murashige and Minty Lewis. All four seasons are available to stream on HBO Max.
