Daniel Mullin Games has revealed its newest game Inscryption, a mix of card games, escape rooms, and horror elements in one sinister title. The game will be published by Devolver Digital later this year, and was revealed during the publisher’s E3 showcase on June 12th.

Daniel Mullins is a game developer from Vancouver. He is best known as the creator of Pony Island and The Hex. He’s also taken part in many game jams over the years, creating titles such as One Room and MacRomeo and Julius. Inscryption is actually an expanded version of Mullins’ game for Ludum Dare 43, Sacrifices Must Be Made. Devolver Digital, meanwhile, is the publisher behind notable indie games such as Enter the Gungeon, GRIS, and Fall Guys.

The official website describes Inscryption is described on the official website as a mix between a roguelike card game and a puzzle game. Gameplay will range from deckbuilding to escape room-style puzzles, with psychological horror elements. It’s planned to be released to PC and Steam in 2021, with a possible console launch afterward. It was announced via a trailer posted to Devolver Digital’s YouTube channel following its E3 presentation.

The main focus of the game will be the card game itself. That aspect appears to follow traditional TCG-style rules, similar to games like Hearthstone. According to Devolver Digital’s website, decks will be built using “drafts, surgery, and self-mutilation.” There are a few peeks at the puzzles in the game. Solving a combination lock seems to be one of the bigger obstacles – a natural fit, given the escape room inspiration. The trailer also seems to show off FMV and pixelated graphics, possibly with their own unique gameplay attached. These may show up when the player escapes the cabin.

Devolver Digital calls the cabin “Leshy’s” on their website. Who or what Leshy is exactly is not disclosed. Most likely, it is one of the opponents the player will face over the course of the game, but this is purely speculation. It is also worth noting that the Leshy is a forest spirit from Slavic mythology. Given how the official description Inscryption a “mind melting (sic), self-destructing love letter to video games,” the mystery and more meta elements teased are quite fitting.

There is no official release date for Inscryption, and it is listed as still in development on David Mullins’ website. Hopefully, more information on this intriguing title will be released closer to the launch date. For now, fans of horror and genre-mashing video games should consider following this game or requesting access to the title’s beta on Steam. Both David Mullins and Devolver Digital are known for their fascinating, category-busting video games, and Inscryption should be another fascinating addition to their respective libraries.
