Indiana Jones 5 Theory The Movies Delays Are Because Of DeAging Technology

Indiana Jones 5 has been delayed numerous times, and the reason could be that the filmmakers are waiting for de-aging technology to develop further in order to better recreate the franchise’s heyday. Starring Harrison Ford in the titular role, Indiana Jones made a big splash with 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, receiving two direct sequels – The Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade – before being revived in 2008’s much-maligned Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

A fifth entry in the series has long been discussed and, in 2016, Disney (having purchased Lucasfilm back in 2012, and therefore Indiana Jones) announced that a new film would be released in 2019. Then, in 2017, it was pushed back to 2020. In 2018, 2021 – until, finally, in 2020, it was delayed until 2022. While Harrison Ford might have aged like a fine wine, he’s no spring chicken – making the various delays feel counterintuitive to the project’s success and, increasingly, the likelihood of it actually being made in the first place. In what world could more time be useful to such a seemingly time-sensitive project? The answer, perhaps, lies in digital technology. Namely, de-aging techniques that could be used to make Harrison Ford look young again.

An unnatural extension of traditional makeup techniques, digital de-aging is becoming increasingly prevalent in Hollywood; taking famous stars from yesteryear and transforming them into their younger selves with the aid of CGI masking. While early forays into digital de-aging are often laughable by today’s standards (X-Men: The Last Stand and Tron: Legacy come to mind), recent efforts have been far more successful, though still tend to slip into “uncanny valley” territory from time to time. The Irishman showed that, while it might be getting easier to change the way someone’s face looks, an older actor will be unable to move in the same way they did when they were younger – creating a disconnect between the character’s physicality and their supposed age (relevant, given Indiana Jones’ status as an action hero).

Box-office bomb Gemini Man was more successful in this regard, creating a de-aged, CGI replica of Will Smith that could be manipulated via motion capture to better account for his physical and aesthetic developments over the years, rather than laying a digital mask over more restrictive live footage. What’s more, many fan-made deepfake videos rival Hollywood’s output (albeit on a much smaller scale), suggesting that the technology might finally have caught up with the filmmakers’ vision for Indiana Jones 5. That said, franchise-creatives George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have struggled to reach a consensus on Indiana Jones scripts in the past, making it likely that the delays could stem from a similar story-based issue; though both have been early adopters and – in some cases – revolutionaries in their use of digital effects.

Digital aging, digital de-aging, and now even digital resurrection are becoming increasingly common practice in Hollywood. Digital resurrections used to be a last-ditch effort, utilized when a notable actor had passed away midway through a project – like Oliver Reed in Gladiator or, more recently, Paul Walker in the Fast and Furious series – but the addition of Peter Cushing’s likeness in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story suggested a worrying (yet intriguing) shift in ethics. While digital de-aging is a short term solution for Indiana Jones 5, Harrison Ford won’t be able to play the role forever. Somewhere down the line, the part will be re-cast under Disney’s ownership, but whether that will involve a CGI replica of Ford or not thankfully remains to be seen.
