Instagram has announced a plan to let parents and guardians keep an eye on their children’s accounts, allowing them to lock them down. The social platform has come under much scrutiny for how well it does (and does not) protect its younger users. Earlier this year, a representative for parent firm Meta (formerly Facebook) defended Instagram on several fronts. This included teenagers’ use of under-the-radar secondary accounts — commonly known as finstas — and suggestions that the app was not doing enough to tackle bullying and eating disorders. Instagram found itself even more under the microscope when former Meta employee Frances Haugen testified in front of lawmakers in both the U.S. and the U.K., saying the company does not have the determination to make its apps safe.
Amid the turmoil, Meta paused plans for Instagram kids, an app specifically aimed at users aged 10 to 12 years old. However, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said he still believed it was a good idea, noting it would have allowed parents to “supervise and control” their children’s experience. Though Mosseri didn’t discuss details, he promised those tools would extend to the main version of Instagram, making them available for parents of teenagers aged 13 and older.
In an update, Mosseri says Instagram will soon provide parents and guardians more insight into their children’s accounts, allowing them better control over what their kids do on the app. Starting in March 2022, adults will be able to see how much time they spend on the app and also set usage limits. Teenagers will also have the option to automatically notify adults if they report an account, thereby facilitating any conversations about what has occurred. Additionally, Instagram plans to introduce an “educational hub” for parents and guardians, helping them understand the app better.
Instagram Launching Take A Break
Starting today, the platform is rolling out its Take A Break feature in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The tool notifies users when they’ve been using the app for an extended period and encourages them to do something else for a while. Mosseri notes the feature is not specific to teens, but he says Instagram will make younger users aware of the tool via in-app alerts. Mosseri says the social network has done some provisional testing on the feature, finding 90 percent of teenagers who activated Take A Break pop-ups kept them on.
Mosseri says these updates are just the start of what Instagram has planned and that more features will launch over time. Still, while it’s encouraging to see the changes, it remains to be seen if they will satisfy calls for the platform to do better. After all, Meta previously denied it was responsible for finstas, but it has since encouraged users to create such accounts.
