Invasion Just Cleverly Flipped A Classic War of the Worlds Scene

Apple TV+’s Invasion just cleverly flipped a classic War of the Worlds scene in their latest homage to the alien sci-fi genre. Invasion’s reception has certainly been lukewarm to date, with many critics citing the series’ lack of action and glacial pacing as fundamental flaws. The Apple TV+ original show, however, has undoubtedly been keen to give nods to the genre classics that preceded it, with Invasion littered with science fiction movie references spanning the last 70 years.

Invasion episode 6, “Home Invasion,” sees the Malik family trapped by Patrick Mitchell (Michael Harney) and his wife in their attic. Patrick threatens the Maliks with a shotgun, holding them hostage, while his wife Kel (Kathryn Erbe) loudly curses the aliens bombarding upstate New York. Kel’s increasingly verbose psychotic break attracts the attention of an unidentified alien, who proceeds to attack the humans trapped in the house. Aneesha Malik (Golshifteh Farahani) is forced to protect her family by seemingly allowing Patrick to die as she flees with them.

In this way, Apple TV+’s Invasion just flipped a classic War of the Worlds scene by using an almost identical series of events to the 2005 movie. The basement struggle between a mentally frayed Harlan Ogilvy (Tim Robbins) and Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) mirrors the motivations and actions of Patrick and Aneesha, respectively, indicating Invasion’s apparent homage to a classic alien invasion story. Simon Kinberg’s Invasion looks to have simply traded a basement setting for an attic, flipping the initial direction of the alien threat.

2005’s War of the Worlds sees Tom Cruise’s Ray Ferrier desperately trying to save his daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) from massive tripod war machines that have descended from the sky. After losing his son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) in the midst of a military strike against the aliens, a bewildered Ray and Rachel seek shelter with (Dark Waters actor Tim Robbins’) Harlan Ogilvy in his basement. It is slowly revealed in subsequent scenes that Ogilvy is mentally unwell, a condition that infinitely worsens after he witnesses aliens harvesting human organs and blood above ground. Harlan begins madly shouting, cursing the alien invasion, and forcing Ray to kill him before Ogilvy alerts the aliens to their presence.

Invasion’s “Home Invasion” episode, therefore, is incredibly similar to this harrowing Tim Robbins and Tom Cruise-led scene from 2005. While Invasion has traded a damp basement for a creaking attic, every other facet of this subplot plays out identically. Kel’s mad shouting alerts aliens in the same way Harlan does, with Patrick also threatening the Maliks with a shotgun in the same way Harlan does with Ray and Rachel. Somewhat like Cruise’s Ray in the War of the Worlds, Aneesha allows the Mitchells to meet their fates: Kel dies mostly through her own accidental misstepping, but Aneesha does not help, notably, and when Patrick throws her the carkeys to start the car, she doesn’t attempt to help as he’s overcome and killed. Although Aneesha still ultimately has to kill the alien with a knife in a way that Ray Ferrier does not in, the parallels between Invasion’s “Home Invasion” and War of the Worlds’ Tim Robbins scenes remain stark.
