Invincible Atom Eve Powers & Abilities Explained

WARNING: The following contains SPOILERS for Invincible, episode 6, “You Look Kinda Dead.”

Since her introduction, Invincible’s Atom Eve and her molecule-bending abilities have made for some of the show’s most visually stunning fight sequences. In episode 6, audiences saw the hero strike out on her own to engage in her own brand of do-gooding, wanting to use her powers to help people in ways that don’t involve tangling with supervillains. Witnessing news of natural disasters from her smartphone, Atom Eve adopts the mantra “Make the world you want to live in” before setting out on her new mission. With powers as formable as hers, that world will be in exceptionally good hands.

A mainstay of the Invincible Image Comics series (which, like the Amazon show, is written by Robert Kirkman), Samantha Wilkins, a.k.a. Atom Eve, was intended as a genetically engineered weapon by the government. While the show hasn’t yet ventured too far into those origins, it has become clear that Atom Eve is a force to be reckoned with, even in a world in which beings like Omni-Man exist. At first glance, Atom Eve appears to be a Marvel Girl/Jean Grey analog from Marvel’s X-Men franchise. However, the series has begun to establish that Atom Eve’s power set is all her own.

In Invincible episode 2 “Here Goes Nothing,” Atom Eve and the Teen Team join with Mark to defeat the Flaxans, an alien race from the Invincible comics intent on overtaking Earth. Her contributions to the battle are instantly recognizable, thanks to her power’s pink energy signature. Throughout the fight, Samatha hurls energy blasts, lifts heavy objects and enemies with fine-tuned telekinesis, and constructs protective forcefields. Atom Eve is also able to fly, by creating small hovering force fields to support her as she soars at high speed.

By the time the audience sees her in Invincible episode 5 “That Actually Hurt,” the show starts to confirm that, at the heart of these feats, is her ability to alter molecular structure at the subatomic level. After an argument with her parents, Atom Eve transmutes a door into existence in a way that harkens to Scarlet Witch’s reality-warping in WandaVision. Episode 6 “You Look Kinda Dead” takes these powers further, showing Atom Eve quite literally changing the world around her, creating a new home for herself, turning infertile soil into a lush field of crops, and stopping a forest fire before promptly replacing the destroyed trees.

Still, if the comics are to be trusted, even these formidable abilities are just the beginning of what Atom Eve is capable of. During her long comic book history, she has also displayed the ability to regenerate herself, even after a fatal injury, making her essentially immortal. So, while the show may lead viewers to see Atom Eve as something of a “glass cannon” – that is, a fighter who can deal immense damage without being able to take damage – these comics-accurate abilities, aided by her versatile combat powers, make her one of the Invincible universe’s strongest players.

Invincible’s Atom Eve may not have had the same amount of screen time as many of the series’ other characters, but as the season progresses, she is sure to have an increasingly prominent role. In the source material, her semi-retirement from superheroism was relatively short-lived, so fans can expect Atom Eve and her luminous pink powers to reenter the fray before too long. Good thing, too. With hints that Omni-Man is bent on conquering Earth, humanity (and Mark) will need all the help they can get.
